My City

My name is Shane, and this is my city. I live in Sydney, Australia. Sydney is famous for its beautiful harbour, Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Sydney is on the eastern coast of Australia between the cities of Newcastle in the north and Wollongong in the south. There are many beaches to visit and I love spending my time down at the beach. I especially like the beaches where there are not many people.

The view from the Botanical Gardens to the city centre and harbour is amazing. The Botanical Gard

What The Hell Was I Thinking?

Half of this piece was written during the earlier part of 2012. When I received the news that my father was dying, I decided to finish it before his passing. He left this planet on October 22 2012. This one is dedicated to him. The writing was very hard for me to even think of posting here. But, it's time for me to move on from the grief and begin living again. My next blog that's posted will be much more humorous.

Speak English even in Dream

English has always been my passion ever since I was a child. How was that possible? A mystery I could not fathom. None of my family member speaks English. Neither my friends. Not even my neighbours. Once, when I was about nine or ten years old, I tried to practice my English with a distance cousin. I uttered a few sentences that I picked up at school to her. Hopefully she would answer me back in English. Instead, she laughed at me.

Finally, I had the opportunity to practice my speaking at Seconda

Is it just a new year according to the calendar?

or is it really a new year in your life?

How can it be a new year if you enter it with the same habits, same character and same fault without changing anything within yourself.

I will change myself for the better.

Listening is Vital and Challenging

To my husband’s credit, I watch a lot of movies and documentaries mostly in English for the past 2 years. It has become our habit to watch 3 to 4 movies everyday. These 2 days we have been watching Granada Television’s 7 Up Series broadcasted by BBC. It has eight episodes spanning 49 years. It’s a very interesting documentary about the lives of 14 British children since 1964, when they were 7 years old. I am sure some of you are aware of this documentary.

The challenge of watching this documentar

Chinese Spring Festival is coming.

Chinese Spring Festival is the biggest festival in a year in China. This year, the festival begin at Feb 9th.(two days left.)

According to the wikipedia, the "Year" pronounced as "Nian" in Chinese Pinyin, was a monster in ancient times in China. The monster appeared and broke into villages to hurt people at the end of a year. In the beginning, people didn't know how to prevent YEAR from entering, and then, at another end of a year, when Year appeared again, a burned bamboo (cracker) just blew up

Self Introduction

This topic seems easy but I am always speechless whenever people ask me to tell about myself. Too much information came rushing into my mind at once. I am not sure what exactly they want to know or which information should I tell them first. Thanks to Tara Benwell for outlining some ideas on this topic. To start practicing my writing, I wish to write at least 300 hundreds word a day. So, let’s give it a go.

When I was born my eldest sister named me Asnida Darwis after a famous female singer durin

Overwhelmed

My membership has just been approved this morning after impatiently waited since yesterday. Now, I am like a child with a new toy :-)

I am hyperventilating at the moment. Not from running but from overwhelmed that I am here and I can't wait to start practicing my writing. While browsing what I can do here, some members started to sent me messages and I am struggling to chat with a few people at the same time. The need to reply to all of them and the feeling to know more about this site make me th

My birthday was on Sunday, So I and my friends decided to celebrate it on Monday. Yesterday, when I went to college everyone hugged me.

After taking lectures we went in market to celebrate my birthday. My friends prepared a surprise for me. They decided to bring a cake for me. We were total eight in number. Two of them held the responsibility to keep me unaware of that surprise. Rest of the five were separated in group of two and three. I was waiting for them. I saw them coming with cakes. Yeah C

My Life to Live

A note from the author: I composed this about four months ago. Some of my English Club friends have seen it already. It's a symbolic writing and is still unedited. For the serious learners and people that I haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet; Please just read "deeply" and know that English has many levels of comprehension.

My Life To Live

As an average farmer with an occupation that consisted of brutal labor and small yields, my way of life wasn't easy. Summers were short and hot. Winters we

Heart or mind

Sometimes, the mad people have far more sense than the logical people. This truth was shown rather clearly during one of competitions at the Seattle Olympics; there were nine mentally disabled contestants. All of them stood on the start line for racing hundred meters running. The race began by a shouting of pistol. The participants set out, but one of them could not jog, he stumbled and fell down then started crying on the track. The eight participants heard his crying and looked back at him. Th

Smille ... The Tramp.

A tramp was sleeping on a park bench late at night. A man and woman were walking past. One of them tapped him on the shoulders and asked, Excuse me! What's the time? The tramp was  very annoyed at being woken up. I don't know! He said angrily. I haven't got a watch. And he went back to sleep.

Some time later another man was passing. He woke the tramp up and said, I'm sorry to bother you, but I wonder if you could tell me what time it is.

Again the tramp said that he didn't know. By now he was very

Do you know him?

Yasmina Khadra, an officer in the Algerian army, was born in 1955 in Algeria. His father was a nurse and his mother was nomadic. He adopted a woman's pseudonym to avoid military censorship. Despite the publication of many successful novels in Algeria, Mohammed Moulessehoul, his real name, only revealed his true identity in 2001 after leaving the army and going into exile and seclusion in France. Anonymity was the only way for him to survive. In 2004, Newsweek acclaimed him as "one of the rare wr
