These are used with a large socket wrench to turn nuts (hexagon shaped) on very large stud bolts. This may require a few thousand pounds of torque to tighten something like that. It would be used on a pressure vessel in an oil refinery or a large wind turbine, or water tower.

Hi Nadira,
You wondered about the sockets which are parts used with a socket wrench, see how they are open on both ends. One end has a square hole where a large handle is attached or else a hydraulic wrench attaches there. The other end (the larger end) fits over a large bolt or nut and is used to unscrew (loosen) these or tighten them up. It is similar to what is used to take the wheel off a truck or car, but these are much larger.
These socket wrenches are dangerous things, because whatever the size of the socket. The handlebar is always in same weight/length, u need to keep it in mind when using very small sockets.. Not to turn too hard!
Lately when I was repairing bicycle, I made this mistake twice.. broke the screw inside of frame by overturning. Fortunately it was just only the rack mounting screw hole. So I could use nut there. But I have broke so many small screws and nuts, that I have become to hate small bolts/screws.. Although I'm rather weak than strong. But yeah, I break big bolts too, by inserting a pipe to handlebar for extra torque or so.. So I'm just bad at mechanic :P
I hope, that soon someone will invent something better, to replace screws, that can be overturned by fools.

I wonder what this socket used for.
