Do you have HOV lanes in your country? What does HOV stand for? Would you know what to do if you saw this sign on the highway in an English speaking country?

  • Thanks Tara!

  • Sorry to leave you all hanging...

HOV stands for "High Occupancy Vehicle". During high-traffic times, it is a lane reserved for commuters and motorists who have more than one person in the vehicle. The sign will typically tell you how many people have to be in the car in order for you to use it. This sign indicates that you must have at least three people in the car in order to use this lane. HOV lanes are designed to encourage carpooling.

So, if you're ever in an English-speaking country, and you see this sign, be sure to count your passengers. If you are driving alone in an HOV lane, you could get fined.

  • i want to know what that sign stand for,in my country there is no such a thing, so please tell us what that mean
  • I'm curious, too!

  • I just Googled the meaning of HOV. LOL. 'HOV - 3 Only' does the signage restricting vehicles with more than 3 people inside or it means at least 3 person inside? I am a bit confuse on that part. Over here, we don't have SOV or HOV restriction, but there's a restriction for heavy vehicles such as trucks from entering certain roads at certain time.

  • Reading from the signage I guessed HOV meant something of the opposite of SOV - single occupancy vehicle. But I'm not too sure the meaning of that acronym. But I'm familiar with SOV because it's a well known acronym over here.
