Writing Challenge #38: If Only

Thank you to all of the MyEC members who have taken my Writing Challenges in 2011. I enjoy reading and correcting your writing. You inspire me! You should be very proud of what you have accomplished.

We are coming to the end of a year, and it's time to reflect on the past and prepare for the future. One word that helps us do this in English is the word "if". Do you know how to use this word properly?

Your Task

1. Review the structure of Conditionals on EnglishClub.com. Take the quiz to check your

So, here we are… A few days into the New Year. It is the time we hear people making plans and think maybe if we do too, it is no harm. Or, feel like must do, or maybe not…

In order to start doing something, making a to-do-list is always better. At least, according to doing nothing… Moreover, every year brings about a thoughtful look at the past. As the year comes to an end everybody makes plans to change the deleterious or lazy parts of their lives. Why not start with new year’s resolutions? "New

Winning caption by Kezang Tshering: "Finally! The price of potatoes goes down."

Image by Victoria B via ELTPics.

Funny note:
This week I could not decide between this potato picture and this hilarious image recommended by @fionamau. (Would anyone else like to use it? Go ahead and create your own Wordless Wednesday post with an ELTpic. Just follow the rules for giving credit to the photographer.)

I've noticed that some of the members here prefer clicking on the "Like" to adding a comment on what they've just read or seen. There's nothing wrong, though, and most likely the blogger will appreciate it if you click on the button after you've read their blogs. I just wanted to say it might be not good enough to show your appreciation by just clicking on the "Like" rather than really adding a comment on what you really liked.

I usually leave a comment on what I like. I just read this blog by Ta

How do YOU learn effectively?

We all learn new things in a different way. Some people learn best one way more than another.

Personally, I need to read something in order to learn it well. I like to take notes and rewrite what I've learned. Wise quotes help me take in important information. I need to see a map or read directions if I want to go somewhere new. You could say I'm a visual learner. Visual learners need to see something in front of them, such as a diagram, a video, or a written explanation in order to learn it we

Snow again

Standing in front of the window,I looked at the flying snow outside, then I think of the snow one year ago in my hometown. But now I am far from home in a distant place leaving my wife alone at home.

Frankly speaking,I graduated in 2009 and have worked in this field for almost three years.Usually we need to fly form one place to another when one project is finished, and most time of the year we will be outside. That is the worst thing to my wife as I know.often for two or three months I will make a

On the way to school today, my daughter asked a funny question:

Is there another word for "hiccup"? (also spelled "hiccough")

I thought for a while, but I couldn't think of a synonym for hiccup. My daughter is fascinated by words and wordplay and has asked for a traditional hardcover dictionary (the big fat kind) for Christmas. I still remember when I got my big red Webster's dictionary for Christmas. I dreamed of being a writer, and I knew I would need one! (I only wish I hadn't tossed it before

Why not read it again?

I consulted a grammar book again when I was trying to find an answer to a question this morning - it's been a long time since I last read the book. When I was looking through its table of contents, I found I needed to read some of its items again because I wasn't so sure if I really understood them, or rather some of the entries were so unfamiliar to me now even though I had read them more than once.

Yes, people forget things, and repetition seems to be one of the most effective ways to learn. So

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town?

Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town

"You better watch out.  You better not cry.  Better not pout, I'm telling you why.  Santa Claus is coming to town."

Christmas is just right around the corner.  The big ole guy with a fat white beard in a red suit is back!

"He's making a list and checking it twice.  Gonna find out who's naughty and nice.  Santa Claus is coming to town."

I remember when I was a kid, every year I would hang one of my socks on our window on Christmas eve before going to bed.  (Yes, it's the

Share Your Favorite Christmas Song

Christmas is in the air.  Burrrrr...and I'm freezing!  I especially love this season of the year not only because of the cold weather but also because I get to listen again and again to those sweet Christmas carols.  I believe that the spirit of Christmas is incomplete without the Christmas music playing wherever we go.  So I thought we can all spread this joyful season here on EC by sharing and listening to each other's favorite Christmas song.

I'd love it if you would please post here your al

2346329486?profile=originalI'm not the only English language teacher who likes to challenge people! Many English language teachers are bloggers. They challenge each other to blog about different things. Today I read a challenge by a teacher named Adam Simpson. I added it (and revised it slightly for MyEC purposes) to the Challenge Group. Please check out the instructions for the challenge before you read my post.

What I learned Today

1371785442_e4127b9839.jpg

+ I learned that the mind is like a field, and every idea that we think about it for a long time is like watering, and we will get only what we plant either good ones or bad ones.

floral1-h.gif

+ I learned that in schools or universities we get lessons then we do exams, but in life we face exams then we learn the lessons.

floral1-h.gif

+ I learned that a simple conversation or a short dialogue with a wise person equals a month’s study.

+ I learned that it’s not important where you are now, but where are you going in this mom

My English experience

i remembered that during my high school days, my English was super bad and i meant it was really really really bad. i wrote triple 'really' so that you can imagine how awful and terrible it was.

there was once, during English examination, we were asked to write a narrative essay. we were given few boxes of simple cartoon pictures along with some short notes stated under each picture. it was a story about a thief who entered 'my' house during midnight.

i remembered how struggled i was to write e

This challenge was held a long time ago by Nadira. And some friends already shared their experiences in their blog posts. Actually, I wanted to write about this topic, but I felt hesitate hesitant. Some other friends already wrote a pieces of information that I thought was helpful for us.

So, I decided to not not to write about this topic and stop repeating what others had written. However, I finally found several things that I would like to add to their blog posts. And also, I want to practice m

Cyber-bullying: my personal experiences

After I finished writing my latest blog about my experiences on main chat room, I read this term: cyber-bullying on a local newspaper. Somehow, I noticed that this term is suitable to describe some rude behaviors that I saw on my virtual life whether on MyEC, Facebook, etc.

What is cyber-bullying?

Well, cyber-bullying as explained on Wikipedia is when people use technology such as Internet to do or support hostile or rude actions like humiliating, abusing, intimidating, etc. Some people think that
