Inside of surface condenser. Notice the water droplets at the top. Below are brass tubes which carry cold water through the shell. At the top is large opening which is a pipe maybe 4 feet in diameter. Steam comes in through the large opening and is cooled and condensed to water droplets. When it condenses the volume is greatly reduced making a vacuum inside. Piping that is connected to it connects the vacuum (negative pressure) to other process equipment where a lack of pressure is needed. This also is a source of pure water condensed form the steam so it can be used where pure water is needed for processes.

I love condensers of every kind. Vacuum condensers are especially nice given that they operate under a negative pressure. They also have a long life before failure if they are design well and properly maintained.
