In a bygone era the rich landlords did own elephants, as they did the heavy work of carrying loads . yeah I guess their appetite is not that small, s big as their size.
The Elephant in the picture is the temple elephant . It is one of the main elephants reared to carry the casket of the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha, during the procession period.
this elephant is called Raja you could see it with all its glitter during the Navam Perehera.[Perehera is the festive procession ]
Over in Kandy there is an elephant orphanage Ohnie an american EC member visited recently on her visit to the Island.
I understand people can sponsor to look after elephants , as once inquired by a friend of mine from UK
May be I should get some details and write a little history of our elephants, as a blog, not a bad idea no Bob? ehehehe.
Thankyou for your kind interest.
