I have been teaching English for about 7 years now. At first it was a big challenge because I realized how much I needed to learn about my own language in order to teach it. We all learn our native language quite automatically and don't think much about why we do certain things in our language. Suddenly I had students asking all sorts of questions and I had to research why we do what we do.
I have researched and studied a lot on my own and feel I now know more than most English speakers about the language we speak. So now I can explain it to English-learners. Now it is easy.
An advantage to teaching English is that I do learn more about my own language. However, the best advantage is being able to help immigrants learn a tool that improves the quality of their lives. It feels so good to see them improve and actually learn to like English. Another advantage is getting to know a lot of really motivated people from other cultures. Everyone is so interesting and I find that most of them become my friends. Our classes are full of fun and laughter. The only negatives for me are getting all the materials printed out and keeping up with the demand to create new lessons. I never repeat my lessons and alway am creating new ones. But all in all, I love it.
Hi Nina,
Thanks so much for the compliment. I love photography and I love the Colorado mountains. So it makes a nice combination. Do you like photography?
