  I am sorry for the delay in answering your question. In the example you used regarding the possible new iPhone screens, bought into is used as believed or accepted.  They are saying that they do not yet accept or believe the rumors.  Maybe they will believe it if some evidence is available later.

  You can also use buy in or buy into to describe acceptance of something.  An example might be:

  We want to make a new rule forbidding mobile phones in class.  This will only work if we get the teachers to buy into the idea and enforce the rule.
