  • For is used for duration. It answers the question, "How long does something take from start to finish?"
I slept for ten hours because I was so tired.
How long does it take to walk to the restaurant? Oh I usually drive for 5 minutes, but I have to walk for 20 minutes.
I cooked the carrots for 30 minutes and they are too soft and mushy.
I have been learning English for 5 years.

During means you are in the midst of a period of time or continuous action. It doesn't tell you how long it is. We often use the simple past to show that this period of time was interrupted by an event. During my surgery I woke up and was scared to death. During the wedding the bride fainted. But we can also use it like the word while for something that happened in the same time period as the first action.During the rain storm my dog hid under the table. I could have said: While it was raining my dog hid under the table. My best friend was sleeping during his English exam.
    I hope this helps.
  • Hi Tanya,
Don't place "already" between been and waiting. The most natural form is at the end. I've been waiting for five months already. OR I've already been waiting for five months.

    Your future construction is correct.
    Cheers,
    Tara
