  • 10 Fun Things to Do Before School Starts

    9548144858?profile=RESIZE_930x

Get some last-minute, end-of-summer ideas from this bucket list and turn mundane back-to-school tasks into something enjoyable.
While fall means cooler weather, changing leaves and cute boots and scarves, it also means back to school for students and possibly less fun for parents as well as kids. Go out and enjoy the last few weeks of freedom before your main concern becomes whether or not you've purchased enough number two pencils. Here are some ideas.

    Go camping

Camping is an outdoor activity that becomes difficult the colder it gets, particularly the farther north you live. If you don't have tents or don't want to borrow or rent them, make a makeshift tent in the backyard, or even in the house, with sheets. Your kids will have a blast, even if you're just hanging out in the living room.

    Make homemade Popsicles

Popsicles are such a summer treat that you don't want to pass up the chance to have them before it gets too cold outside. Fresh fruit Popsicles are delicious and so easy to make. They're healthier than store-bought ones as well. The Popsicle recipe book Paletas is filled with wonderful ideas. Here are a few recipes from the book.

    Have a movie marathon

Seriously, how often will you be able to do this once school starts? Invite some friends over, or if you have kids invite your kids' friends, have some snacks and watch a few flicks. If you really want to go all out, have a bucket of popcorn, a box of candy and a drink for each person or kid.

    Cool off in the water

If you're close enough to the shore, go to the beach for the day. Build some sand castles, play in the waves, collect some sea shells and soak up as much of the summer sun as you can. If you're more inland, go to a lake or river and do some boating, canoeing, tubing or fishing. If all else fails, play in the sprinklers in your own yard!

Make a summer scrapbook or time capsule

College students, did you study abroad, take a road trip or go backpacking in Europe? Families, did you go on a fun family vacation, visit grandparents or send your kids to camp over the summer? Document your memories by making a scrapbook or time capsule at the end of summer. Parents, your kids can help you and even have something to bring in for show-and-tell when they explain what they did over the break.

    Go on a nature hike

The flowers are blooming, the cicadas are singing, the weather is warm, so get outside and enjoy nature. You don't even have to go far. Just explore somewhere around town, a lake, a river, the woods, a park or just your backyard. Give your kids glass jars to collect bugs they find (catch some fireflies if you're out at night! ) or baskets to gather flowers they see. Have a picnic while you're outside enjoying nature. Trails.com is a great resource for finding hiking trails almost anywhere in the U.S.

    Make summer reading assignments fun

A lot of kids have summer reading lists as homework over the break. As this can be less than thrilling for some kids, try to make finishing their books a fun experience. Have some kind of reward for them when they're finished, like going to see a movie or a trip to a water park. If your kids are outgoing, have them act out their favorite scene in the book with their siblings or school friends. Make a play or theater production out of it with parents as the audience.

    Take in a baseball game

As America's favorite pastime, baseball is mainly considered a summer sport. Go to a game, buy a hot dog or a frozen lemonade and cheer on your team if you have a major or minor league team close by.

Make buying school supplies and back-to-school clothes into an adventure game
Back-to-school shopping with mom could be the last thing on a kid's list of priorities, and it might not be a day a the beach for a parent either. Create a list of everything you need to find for school and change the idea of drudgery into a mission your kids can help you to accomplish. "Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to track down these items. Your success in school depends on it. This message will self destruct in five seconds." (You get the idea.) Changing the tone of the errands will make it more fun for parents too, not just kids. Then go out for ice cream when you've completed your mission.

Have one last day of summer camp

Are your kids' overnight and day camps over for the summer? Maybe your kids didn't attend camp this year? Plan a camp day and do all sorts of camp things they won't be able to do again for a whole year. Do some arts and crafts, go on a nature hike, play kickball, put on a talent show, tell stories around a fire, make s'mores or plan activities around their favorite hobbies.
