An essay is a short type of writing in which the author chooses a specific topic and expresses his/her personal views. As there is no subject limitation in essays, essays can be written on many subjects such as literature, politics, religion, daily life, sports, art. The essay genre entered Turkish literature after the Tanzimat period under the influence of Western literature and developed after the Republic. In Turkish literature, Ahmed Hâşim, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Nurullah Ataç, Suud Kemâl Yetkin, Melih Cevdet Anday, Mehmed Kaplan, Sezâi Karakoç are among the names who wrote in this genre. Nurullah Ataç gave the most successful examples of the genre, which requires mastery in the use of prose language, strong observations of the world and people, and broad culture.
