Your first sentence was fine. I would put the gradually in front of being, but otherwise it is good natural English.
As far as having much time to do anything but teach English, you are quite correct. I don't. But it is my passion to teach English. I like English and I like teaching so it is a good combination, and English is becoming quite the coveted tool internationally and very much so by immigrants in the USA.
It is so true that writing is easier than speaking. You are not put on the spot and the pressure is less. But I must say that reading your written English is like reading the writing of a native speaker.
One-on-one tutoring is my favorite way of teaching. But it does require a lot of preparation, doesn’t it? I like the close relationship I can develop with the student. It often becomes a friendship for me, beyond the teacher-student relationship. What ages were your students? I teach adults and it is very rewarding because they are motivated.
I had to laugh at your comment about your older children and how their mood depends on which side of the bed they get out of. My wife and I were on a walk yesterday and we saw children leaving their classes for recess on the playground. The younger ones looked so sweet and innocent but the older students all seemed to be carrying “attitudes” just by the way they walked and interacted. I told her I wished Miles and Cora could stay sweet and innocent, but they would eventually develop attitudes as well. It happens.
You are very correct in saying there is a bit more of a burden in raising an adopted child. We always want to make sure he feels accepted and is treated no differently than his biological sister. He had a very difficult start being dragged around the USA by two drugged addicted parents. So we feel he needs a little extra to make up for it. But we want to treat both children equally. So it is a balancing act.
Keep up the excellent writing.
Kate,
I am so old that I actually designed and built the pyramids. I also hope EC can help you with your rusty brain. I know how language is and if we don't use it we lose it. I also speak Spanish, but I am so busy teaching English I have no time to refresh my knowledge of Spanish. I teach English at a center for Hispanic immigrants, but my use of Spanish is limited there.
The English you did write is very good so I am sure you have been a good English tutor. I also do tutoring with about 5 students as well as my classes at the Hispanic center. All my teaching is volunteer work.
Thanks you for the comments about my grandchildren. Of course I think they are beautiful and smart and perfect. Ha Ha. Cora is 8 months and Miles is almost 4 years. Cora is our biological grandchild and Miles was just recently adopted by my son.
How old are your children?
