I'm confuse aBout the different between present perfect continuous tense and present perfect tense.
    Could you explain it?
  • Hi Tanya,
I've received the book of idioms. Unfortunately it could not open. I dont know what is problem, maybe the program of my computer or the file itself. Im still trying to open it now.
But anyway thanks a lot for sending me it.

    Have a nice day,
    Jasmin
  • Thanks, jasmin! I've sent you idioms.

    Hi Tanya,
Thank you for your kindness to share with others. I think you are a good teacher and have good attitude as educator, helpful and encouraging people. You know i always follow your discussion in any groups in this site since your explanation is simple and understandable. I hope you still have time for us to answer all the questions.
I read that you have sent idiom book (i dont know exactly what it is, articles or whatever) to others members by email. If you dont mind could you please send me that one through my mail dek_mala@yahoo.com. You know i am still poor in idiom and i think it will help me a lot. Thanks.

  • Hi, Faridahmad! Here is my answer about the Past Perfect Continuous (Progressive) Tense.

We use this tense when we want to say that some action had been taking place for some time in the past before another (the other) action started. For example:

I had been working as a clerck for a few years before I got a promotion.

We also use this tense in the questions "How long...?" For example:

How long had you been studying before you got Dr. degree?

Any other questions? Please, go ahead!

  • Hi, Faridahmad! I am sorry but your sentence is incorrect. I think you mean email address. If so, the right sentence is:

"I added your email address when I was in your classroom".

These actions are simultaneous. So, we should use the Simple Past in the main clause. We use the Past Perfect Tense only if one action preceded another (or the other) in the past.

Here is the brief description of The Past Perfect Tense.

We use the Past Perfect Tense when:
    a) an action had been over by the stated time moment in the past:

I had finished translating that article by the end of the last week.

    b) an action had been over before the other one took place (or one action was earlier than the other):

When I came home, my brother had already left. (i.e., first, my brother left, then I came)

What is confusing about the Past Perfect Tense? Please, aske me particular questions.

  • Hi, Ebrahim! Nice to meet you. Let me answer to your question.

In such kind of sentences an object describes a subject in this or that way. Besides, in any sentence the first word is stressed more than the others. So, the sentence

    Ali is my student

means the following: there is a guy whose name is Ali and he is my student, i.e., we emotionally stress the word "Ali".

    The sentence:

    My student is Ali

means: I have a student whose name is Ali, i.e., we srtess the words " my student".

As you see, both sentences give the same information but with different emotional accent.

    Hope, I answered your question.
