Here are the specific duties for Chat Room Moderators:
1. Visit the chat room each time you log in to MyEC. (daily if possible)
2. Watch for abusive language, non-English, disrespect and inappropriate content.
3. Take up any minor concerns with individual members via private message.
4. Teach good members how to use the Ignore button!
5. Notify admin about major concerns (chat abuse, bullying, repeated use of bad language or non-English) via "Report a Member" form (bottom of page). Go to the bad member's page first. Then click on the Report a Member form. If you must send a private message to admin, the chat name is not enough. Some members chat under a different name. Click on the member's name, it will take you to their profile page. Be sure to copy and paste the link into your message.
6. Review chatiquette.
7. Help promote the chat room (details below).
Please watch out for:
-Abusive language or content (We don't want to censor for religious or cultural views, but please watch for bullies and people who are swearing or causing trouble for other members.)
-Non English users. A word here and there to help understand English is okay. If two members are speaking their native language other than English, please offer one warning via private message.
Example: "Please remember that the MyEC chat room is for learning English. Members who consistently use other languages in the chat room will be banned from MyEC. Thank you."
If it happens again, report the member(s) using the official form.
How to Promote the Chat Room
1. Write a MyEC blog about the chat room once in a while. How does it help learners practise English? How does it help learners make friends? How can teachers use chat? Do NOT blog about issues you are having in the chat room. Keep it positive.
2. Hold a regular chat (perhaps weekly) on a topic of your choice. Announce it on your page. (Send admin an announcement and we'll help promote it.) Ex. Today's chat: Your Dream Job.
3. Invite new members to join chat. (You can do this on their wall.) Share a link to the chat rules in the MyEC User Guide. http://my.englishclub.com/page/myec-user-guide
4. Invite others online to chat with you regularly.
If you have any questions, please let me know via "send message". All correspondence should be through private messages (not walls, not private email). Please try to keep your messages short and sweet.
Reducing the Volume of Correspondence with Admin
We need to reduce the volume of complaints and reports coming in from chat mods. When we receive too many reports, the worst offenders slip through. I trust that you are all looking out for the best interest of the club, and would like to invite you to be more specific about your banning requests, so that we can keep on top of this together.
Here are some lines that you can copy and use in your messages to me:
Please ban this member for having multiple ID's:
Please ban this member for repeated unacceptable abuse of mods:
Please ban this member for repeated use of non-English:
Please ban this member for repeated abuse of other chatters:
Please ban this recently banned member who returned and is causing the same problem in the chat room:
If you need to send a screenshot, send it to my private inbox.
Please review this screenshot. In my opinion, this member deserves to be banned:
