Mathematical Stories

Hello dear Friends :)

Do you like Math Stories?!

Some stories which say about the importance of math or are depended on math field.

Well…

Let’s share these kinds of stories here :)

Please let me start the first:

"2+2=5!!!"

A teacher taught a boy math. The boy’s name was Arno. He was 7.

“Arno! How many apples would you have if I gave you 2 apples and the other apple and one more apple?” The teacher asked Arno.

“5!” Arno answered definitely.

The teacher felt worry. She expected a right answer for her easy question. She was disappointed.

“Maybe he didn’t pay attention well” She thought.

“Listen carefully, it’s so easy. You can answer it correctly if you listen carefully. How many apples would you have if I gave you 2 apples and the other apple and one more apple? ” She repeated her question.

Arno saw disappointment in his teacher’s face. So, He started counting by his fingers. He was searching an answer so that he could make his teacher glad. His trying wasn’t for finding the right answer. He just wanted to make his teacher happy.

“5” He answered anxiously.

Disappointment was still in teacher’s face.

Suddenly, She remembered that Arno like strawberry. She thought probably Arno didn’t like apple and it was the reason that he couldn’t concentrate.

“Arno! How many strawberries would you have if I gave you 2 strawberries and the other strawberry and one more strawberry?” She asked excitedly.

The teacher seemed happy. There wasn’t any stress there. So he counted with his fingers calmly. But the teacher was worry. She wanted a new success for Arno.

“4” Arno answered.

Now, the teacher smiled victoriously. She wanted to congratulate herself on her success.

But there was still one more thing…

“Arno!! How many apples would you have if I gave you 2 apples and the other apple and one more apple?” She asked again.

“5” Arno answered immediately.

The teacher astonished!

“How Arno?! How…?!!!” She shouted angrily.

“Because I had ONE apple in my bag.” He muttered.

George Gamow says in his book, One Two Three ... Infinity a nice story:

In the great temple at Benares beneath the dome which marks the centre of the world, rests a brass plate in which are fixed three diamond needles, each a cubit high and as thick as the body of a bee, On one of these needles, at the creation, God placed sixty-four discs of pure gold, the largest disc resting on the brass plate, and the others getting smaller and smaller up to the top one. This is the tower of Bramah.. Day and night unceasingly the priest transfers the discs from one diamond needle to another according to the fixed and immutable laws of Bramah, which require that the priest on duty must not move more than one disc at a time and that he must place this disc on a needle so that there is no smaller disc below it. When the sixty-four discs shall have been thus transferred from the needle on which at the creation God placed them to one of the other needles, tower, temple, and Bramins alike will crumble into dust, and with a thunder clap the world will vanish.

The number of moves is 264 – 1, which may be calculated exactly in J by the expression _1+2^64x, which is equal to 18,446,744,073,709,551,615. Gamow remarked that if the priests “worked day and night without holidays or vacation” making one move every second the time  required to move the discs from one needle to another would be slightly more than fifty-eight thousand billion years. He goes on to say that the total age of the universe is estimated to be less than 2 × 1010 years which is considerably smaller tham the 5.8 × 1013 years required by the priests to move the discs.
