  • Hahahahahahahhahha xDDDD

What a great example of misunderstanding the signs. Poor Mr. Bean.

MARY, I think, that sign has no different meanings in other countries. :)

  • Interesting discussion, idealist.

    I am from Libya..

    And this gesture here means...

    Wait/slow down...

Thanks for starting this interesting discussion.

  • I wonder if showing the middle finger has a different meaning in other countries... just to know.

  • hehehe, human kind has curious signals.

I'd remembered my childhood, in those times we had a signal to call some one "monkey": we scratched the top of our head with our arm curved as much as possible, but it's not classic, is it?

What about to show your middle finger pointing to the sky?–)

    • haha, i guess, the gesture stick the middle finger up will be meaning bad insult in everywhere!!

yes, the "monkey" gesture, of course, not very classic, but very interesting~:)

      thank your share~")

  • My dear friend,

I think the reason that members haven't taken part in this discussion is that maybe they do not know what gestures they have in their country and what it means. However, I like your discussion a lot.

In my country, when you move your head up and simultenously raise up the brows, it means no. As you said, "Thums up" in my country is a really bad insult. to show the same meaning as thums up, we form the fingers as V, which means victory, good luck and success. When we want to show how much we respect someone while greeting, we put our hands on the chest and bend a little bit like Japanease people. These are some examples that came to my mind.

    • Interesting... Where I come from we just add a “Tut” to the head that’s moved up to say no & the eyerbows as well.

    • thank you Nafis.

Can I ask you why "thumbs up" means big insult? what kind of insult? Do you know that?

hmm, I try to imagine the action head up and situltenously raise up the brows, it seem like a special gesture. hehe :)

  • hmm,  It seems not too many people are interested in this topic.

maybe I could say more about it in order to draw forth others wonderful examples.

As I know, "thumbs up" is quiet different from different countries. It means 'ok' ' good ' in china, but it seems that meaning insult in Greece.

Also, the gesture which curling your fingers and facing palm to yourself has a meaning 'come here'. but it is a big insult in philippines. of course, that gesture is not always polite in china, for example, you shouldn't do this gesture to older person, teachers, or someone who are should be respected by us.

oh! also have a interesting gesture in Boston here, i just knew.

Crossing your forefinger and middle finger, than put your hand to you back. that's meaning, now, what i say is not the real idea in my mind, like a two-face person. haha

  • Nodding in my home country, Iran, means yes. However, when you move your head up, it means no.
