To meet or not to meet?

Ramona's post on Penpals has inspired me to add up a few lines over here. It's a question that has been bothering me.

Well, we all know how cool it is to make friends on the net. We can chat either on chatrooms or in Skype, get to know people a little bit by their photos and also by their profile online. It's a friendship, yet it's virtual.

But let's face it - how about the real world? What if we had a chance to meet someone outside the computer screen? Would we trust the person enough for a get-together?

I assume I would be a little concerned about it. There are so many stories on the media about people who got in great trouble.

I myself made a friend a couple of months ago in Facebook. She said she's coming to Brazil this year, and, even though she seems to be an extraordinary person, I cannot go and meet her without thinking twice about it.

So my question is: what would you do guys, if you met a nice person on the net and you had the opportunity to meet him/her?

  • Hi there

Wei-Chien, great remark about teenagers - I couldn't agree more!

Lord Maurice, I agree that virtual friends can be totally different from real worls, but in case you meet THAT person, you know, when you just hit in, why not give it a try?

Nadira, it must have been a great experience! I'll check the picture right away!

  • I had this experience , with fello My EC member Ohnie  from USA, I just  checked her link , she  seem to be  taking  a short  break, I guess.

We met  briefly  in my country Sri lLanka, it was a sweet joyful experience indeed:)

  • I might feel like you.

In fact, I met two people from the net in my country. I was kind of nervous thinking.. what will happen? will it be the same as in the computer? will anyone be disappointed?

Well, I am still in contact mostly with one of them, and we have met several times since then, or also talked on the phone or online.  She's a good person.

There are some people I'd like to meet, and I may fantasize with nice moments together, say having a walk, showing him/her my city or my country, enjoying a nice cup of cappuccino...

But one thing is what you dream of, and another is reality.

    I think Martin is right.

  • Martin... this is exactly what I would consider doing! Thanks for commenting.
  • Feialison, I used to think just like you. That was before I met my friend in Facebook...

Karenina, I feel I have reached a dead end. Ok, so let's wait until June so you put an end to this mystery... hhhh

  • Dear all

Thanks for your time reading my post and commenting.

Dreamer Man and Fernando, I like your tips a lot. I think it's a good idea to take some time getting to know more about the person.

Karenina, you are going to meet people from my EC? If I might ask, where are you going? Good luck on your trip.

Fa, you said it would be nice. Have this ever happened to you? If so, could you share your story with us?

  • good question , if i know someone from internet , i may know him for long time to trust him well , on internet people can change their identity to be nice and polite but maybe in the real life they are different !! and also it can be the real personality in the net as well as in real life , its hard to trust people online but for me i think in postive way about my EC 's friends who i know them almost now more than one year , I hope can meet one of my online friends in real life , thnks for sharing  Valeria , nice topic
