Hi I'm from the United States so I will talk about the US flag. It's creation is often credited to Betsy Ross, as the woman who sewed the very first flag, and presented it to George Washington, our first president. However, there is no hard evidence that this is actually true. Some believe that Francis Hopkinson may have created the very first flag. I learned in school that it was Betsy Ross. Whatever the truth, it was created around 1776.
As you can see it is made up of the 3 colors red, white and blue. The 13 red and white stripes represent the original 13 colonies that received independence from England, which in turn became states. The stars represent the actual number of states there are now, which number 50. Of course over the years the number of stars have changed as states where added to the country. Because of this design it has the nick names of: The Stars and Stripes; The Red, White, and Blue; The Star-Spangled Banner. Old Glory is another one. It is often just called The American Flag.
The flag of my country, Brazil is really a beautiful flag. The color blue represents the blue of the sky, the green represents the biggest green area all over the world that is Amazonas, the stars represent the twenty states of Brazil. I love my flag! Good luck dear Sima!
WOOOOW Marik what a pretty flag ... Sky and wheat .. two blessing of God .... and blue is about calm too and i love yellow thanks Marik what a pretty pic ???????? and I have you a question you have to have fields of wheat alot ? dont you?
Hello Sima, very nice blog :)
My friend Adel has answered you :D We belong to the same country :D
The white color represents peace
the green color represents the beauty of nature
the red color represents martyrs' blood
dear sima thanks for the nice blog
the national flag of Iran consists of three main colors(green-white and red)
dyring the history the symbol of the flag has been changed as at first it has been an eagle with open wings with the sun at the back of it,then it has turned into lion and the sun and after the revolution it has turned into the God's name in Arabic language(with the emphasis on the uniqueness of God)
about the colors there has been different ideas but it seems like the green color refers to Islam s the main religion of Iran, the white one refers to peace and the red one refers to braveness.
The Algerian flag consists of two equal parts; the left side with a green color and a white color on the right. The center of the flagdisplays red star inside a red crescent. The color green signifies the nature’s beauty; the color white, peace; the color red, blood of those who were killed fighting for freedom; and the star and crescent moon represents Islam faith. The Algerian flag was adopted on July 3, 1962. The same design of the flag was also used when the government was in exile from 1958 to 1962. The only difference between the flag today and the flag back on Algeria’s exile days was the white part of the flag is evidently bigger than the green one.

Great blog, Sima! I'm really curious about meanings of all these shapes and figures on the national flags.
If speak about Ukrainian flag, it's blue-yellow like this one:
However, Ukrainians commonly refer to the flag as yellow-blue. Actually, a long time ago our flag indeed was yellow-blue, but then, for some reasons, it was rotated to blue-yellow. In spite of this, referring to the flag as yellow-blue has left. Nowadays people say that blue strip means blue sky and yellow ones means yellow fields of wheat under that blue sky. For comparing, look at this typical agricultural landscape of Ukraine:
They are similar, aren't they?
