As per Teacher Tara's recommendation, who has encouraged me to move this writing of mine from the ‘comment’ to my Blog Post. As I wrote especially for the person who made her interest on her blog post for everyone in MyEC, so here it is as below;

Firstly, I would like to tell you all, that I have earnestly & truly confronted some dilemmas myself due to having improved my English much lesser than what I expected and something like staying in the very same level for a long time without any future improvement, just like being frustrated in my determined ambition. Hence, that’s why I’ve actually joined in My English Club to improve my English better & fluently in writing & speaking with a full of comprehended knowledge within the English language & skills, just like a native speaker.

So this following issue was recently brought up and turned into my attention as to think through and to readjust once more, when I corresponded with one of my recent friends who has become my new friend as soon as I joined here in MyEC at the early stage (going back to the early February this year), and left a message for me very first. So I would like to share with you, and I will be most grateful if you would kindly write any comment with your personal opinions or any point of your own views as well. I would like to see anything in everything if possible, whether you agree or disagree with me; -

In fact, we all are trying to learn & improve our English better, aren’t we? Many people believe that the one to one or group conversations may give more opportunities to improve better English, but personally I don’t agree to it. All children from their infant childhood, they objectively learn the language with natural inborn & learning ability by ear, but the grown people have neither the natural learning ears like babies, nor the capabilities to learn the language objectively with the certain comprehension in all its aspect (Certainly it wouldn’t be natural in learning process). This will be very limited ways of learning in process and the learning progress will be very slow in understanding if you haven’t learned English properly with the basic learning process from the scratch. Hence, they must be only in capability of learning the language subjectively starting from the grammars by the books, or by looking at the dictionaries, or by the English teachers. Honestly, I don’t know what the Language scholars talk about this but this is what I have experienced & understood so far.

To a certain extent or degree, I agree to it. So I think that talking on the phone or voice chatting or group talking will be greatly helpful only for those who are aiming to improve their speech in speaking. Nevertheless, I think that this won’t make you improved your English in writing dramatically. Improving Writing & Speaking is totally consisted of two different things in place as considering certain questions in all its aspects. To improve your English vocabularies in speaking is very limited but for a certain degree, of course, you will definitely remember and gradually use certain words in speaking, hence it is essential & absolutely necessary that you need to practice daily how to speak and how to choose the right words in conversation, more & more. These will, that is, initially improve your English in progress. To conclude my opinion right now, writing is like a foundation or a principle. If this basic foundation (as a principle, basic grammar, speech pattern, dialogues & so on) of your writing ability & standard level is well constructed, your speech in speaking will automatically come out with a right manner and good forms in respect, and this may naturally enable you to express yourself certainly with the better English in conversation.

Please don’t get me wrong. English is not my first language at all and I have actually made so many mistakes, maybe grammatically incorrect or not using with the suitable (or correct) words for the right expression.

When you are having a private conversation with someone on the phone(or man to man) or whatever the communication channels you are using in voice, people generally do not correct your mistakes and you yourself don’t realize what you make mistakes in speaking either. Hence, you are hardly learning & improving your second language in comprehension, and you will have same mistakes again & again without any recognition of mistakes in error. Even the MSN messenger chatting in writing is almost identical with the voice chatting (but it will be slightly better because it gives you more time to think & to be able to correct yourself whilst typing). And they used to always be a short & simple note just like a memo (as a broken English writing). However, you may be able to certainly or possibly recognize at least some mistakes either when you write or when you read it again, and people may be kindly enough to correct your mistakes if you don’t mind it or you ask for it, so it is possible and there will be a great potential that you can improve your English in writing and also in speaking afterwards.

In fact I’ve never ever written such long messages in my entire life until just before I joined in My English Club and I have communicated more with the members in e-mail system or other e-mails (Google mail / yahoo mail / hotmail). So I have been beginning to write longer messages by all means, expressing myself anything in everything as exposing myself what impelled me to thus boldly. Whether I do correctly in the right direction or not, this is another home work for me to resolve myself, but I’ve been so wonderful that I am able to at least write longer messages than before. Please don’t misunderstand me. Believe or not, frankly, I am trying neither to impress all of you (If I intended, what benefits & advantages I obtained? It’s absolutely nothing at all!), nor to express thus myself in boasting but I hope that you will take it as my personal testimony. It’s up to you how you would observe this principle of how to learn English fundamentally in a conservative way, but this is what I’ve learned and improved my English dramatically.

However, many people such as Chinese, Japanese & Korean (or somewhere from Far East) have been learning English from the early youth at the school but only grammar not spoken English. We used to have had the very same problems in Korea as well, and I was one of them whose have had 'Dumb English' as they called. I used to have studied in English from my junior school until the university, and then I came to UK to study further educations. At that time I couldn't even say 'Hello' to anybody, and I consistently worried about me (myself) and kept thinking ‘what am I going to do with me now?’ So I know their situation very well, but still they cannot improve their English by the chatting/speaking/listening only. They have a preconception or a fear of English, so they should overcome against these hindrances by learning English again from the scratch, because what they learned their English must have been incorrect. Basically, they have to learn English from ABCD Alphabets first, because their pronunciations must be terrible (if I may say). They should be able to have at least similar English pronunciations in speaking (it has to be as closer as possible, so you need to practice), otherwise, their listening comprehension can neither be improved nor in speaking. You know, I used to be like that, so I had to correct myself in my early day in UK and I have been learning & trying to improve my English from the scratch since then.

I totally understand what other peoples have really concerned about, but their problems are not directly related to my above opinion. When I say writing practice is more helpful than speech practice, I mean that communicating letters/messages (men to men, one by one) just like conversational writings, but not writing essays or reports, because these conversational writing practices give you more time to think through and make you enabled to use the right vocabularies in writings, then later, you could be surprisingly & apparently able to have a proper conversation with anyone in English. This is basically how to improve your English better, and the top of this you can now practice your English in speaking, then gradually you will see the future improvement in writing & speaking with a great potentiality.

  • Hi, Nida!
    Thanks for your encouraging comments. I just popped in and found your comment. Well, I just wanted to suggest something for you, which you should read all my below comments as well, especially of a ‘stream-of-consciousness'. This is basically what you need to do. Please read them and leave what you feel about it.
    Keep thinking & give it a try!
  • Hi, Lilyana!

    Thanks for your comments.

    I am glad that you've been encouraged by my writing. Since you became my friend, I visited in your page & blog post and I honestly felt you seem to have had a great reputation & potentiality here in MyEC, because I could see that you‘ve been determinedly & enthusiastically eager to have a better English in writing, and that you are greatly capable of doing so for your future improvement without any doubt. However, if you really want to improve your English as fluently as possible in writing, the only thing you should do for your writing practices (as I've already suggested to the readers & my other friends), is to have a learning partner who you need to find urgently for the long term based friendship in life. If you can do that, it will be very practical for you to improve your writing English gradually or dramatically, while you would daily communicate with your friend, just like a communicational chat in writing. This can possibly be your daily routine, as a continual writing practice. For your communicational writing in getting to know each other more, you should write each other in anything & everything, whatever is on your mind (just like a ‘stream-of-consciousness’) spontaneously & willingly (with a great respect). Whilst doing so, you will learn & correct yourself in your writings as well as you see & learn other friend's writings with the recognition of their mistakes.

    Actually this is my believing & conceptive principle of how to improve my English fluently in a practical way, as I’ve been repetitively trying to do this practice daily whether I am at home or work, by my closest friend’s help & support whilst promoting our friendship in life.
  • My new friend, Soniya! Thanks for your comment!

    Well, when you have a coversational writing practice with your learning partner whilst promoting your friendship together in life, you will experience the very same as what I've had so far.

    I truly believe that this is the only way to have a better English in writing & speaking at the same time, which I myself figured out and actually improved so much although I still need to learn many other things for my future English improvement.
  • Hi, Alex!

    Thanks for your comment & enquiry. Here are my suggestions for you;

    For your future improvement of learning English, you need to express yourself in anything & everything, whatever is on your mind, as so called 'stream-of-consciousness'. This is the only way that you could possibly have your better English by practicing of daily writings. In order to do so, you need to find a suitable and right person in sharing things with you with any common interests together, so you should firstly make friends for the long term based friendship in life. Then you will continually write each other just like a daily routine, expressing each other as real friends in a true friendship.

    However, the most important thing is that you & your friends should be honest, trustworthy, truthful, respectful, caring, & to be appreciative of your friendship & so on, in order to keep, to develop & to promote your friendship as steadfastly as possibly in a firm relationship.

    I hope that you would understand my suggestions for your future English improvement in writing & speaking. If you have better spoken English than your writing, then you seem to have had more benefit & better potentiality than anybody else. It’s all up to you, how you will do, how much enthusiasm & determination you have, how far you can go with your new friends in a genuine friendship for the long term relationship. This is, in a sense, very easier said than done. There will be many unexpected & possibly hindrances (interferences); such as different genders, different nationalities, different ages, different cultures & so on. So you need to overcome against those obstacles each other before you carry on your friendship with your learning partner. Otherwise, you both may have a hurtful feeling by some reason, so you need to be honest each other from the very beginning in a decent & respect way at all the time. If you have more questions or queries regarding the above subject, please feel free to leave a comment here or on my page, you can invite me as your friend and use MyEC messaging system by all means.
  • this is such a great blog. i can learn many useful things from ur experiments. Actually, my speaking now is much better than writing. So, can you give an advice for this. Continue practising my writing and speaking in the same time or seperate them into different level? Thanks.
  • My friend, Elli!

    Thank you so much for leaving your comments and kind encouragement as you've agreed with my experiences in learning & improving English together.

    Now, I become or so called a impatient friend in everything, as to be enthusiastically eager to improve my English fluently as much as possible in writing & speaking by communicating with my friends more. On the other hand I must now be patient just like a sleeping baby, but a demanding baby as soon as being woken up, determinedly wanting to have my better English with the fluent & phenomenal improvement as a sudden enlightenment. I earnestly think or hope that all of my friends can mutually help each other in this way with a little more enthusiasm for their future improvement. This day I am always demanding more & a bit greedy pig for my English improvement, that's why I am so impatient in a sense. Sorry! I must be patient!
  • Hi,! Tara!

    Thank you for your kind encouragement and good advices.

    As I always believe in the principles, yes, you’re right that I wrote my above writings as you said, so called "stream-of-consciousness", as whatever was on my mind. However, we need to construct the structures in the logical way of writings by the principle of the methodology in writings, if you want to write something for the academic purposes or for the professional business objects.

    Again, I just remembered something, so please bear in mind. I just wanted to express myself whatever I have on my mind in writings, here it is as follow;

    Probably it can be applied to our lives in understanding of mind control as to be disciplined in our writings for ourselves because this methodology in writings actually includes a philosophically coherent collection of theories, concepts or ideas as they relate to a particular discipline or field of inquiry on writing expressions. Methodology of writings refers to more than a simple set of methods in how to write in a logical way for your readers; rather it refers to the rationale and the philosophical assumptions that underlie a particular study relative to the scientific methods, because it requires a full comprehension for those whoever read your writings from the introduction till the conclusion through the sensible & realistic fact in logics.

    If I remember it correctly, this often refers to anything and everything that can be encapsulated for a discipline or a series of processes, activities and tasks. Examples of this are found in software development, project management and business process fields, as well as the essays or reports requiring for the undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD students, with so many references (not just your own creational ideas & developments in thoughts). This use of the term is typified by the outline who, what, where, when, and why. In the documentation of the processes that make up the disciplines & practices in writing, which are being supported by “this” methodology, that is, where we would find the "methods" or processes and progress in writings as well. The processes & progresses themselves are only part of the methodology along with the identification and usage of the standards, policies, rules, etc. in general.

    Sometimes, as I study the Bible for the personal purpose and try to write on the papers (I used to write down in Korean, not in English, I am afraid), I use this kind of methodical concept & principles and tried to find out the will of God who has created this universe & human beings, so why He created us and what for, thinking of who’s for, what, where, when & why through the methodological principles and in the rational way of approaching, so that I would at least consequently reach to some understanding of the Will of God from the Holy Scriptures as what He has done for us as the Almighty & Sovereignty of God.
  • Great post! I hope you find many readers. As teachers we have to keep in mind that English learners have many different goals and dreams. The most important one should always be "communication". Did the reader or listener understand you? Was the reader or listener able to respond? If you can answer yes, then you should be very pleased with yourself! On the other hand, if you have to master English writing for academic purposes or for business, then you have to be more concerned about structure.

    Your writing above is sometimes called "stream-of-consciousness". You write what is on your mind.
  • Hello again!

    Thank you so much for your advice and for your encouraging words. It really lighten up my near- to-dim hope in English learning. I really appreciate you responded me in just not- in- hurry tone mood but in a very friendly way..You really are reaching out for other learner like me!

    I think also what you said is really true. Having a learning partner would be very helpful for one who wants to improve his/her skills in English. But, unfortunately I can't find a learning partner. I have friends who chat to me occasionally and talk to me in a voice chat but we don't have a specific goal in mind on how we could develop our skills..It's just a friendly conversation and hardly talk about grammar, correct pronunciations etc..Even so, talking to them help me a lot and I also enjoy spending time with them..But in a strict sense, if I really want to improve, I have to find someone just like you've said. Someone with the same level or so with the specific goals and of course someone who is willing to give his/ her time and effort to reach the agreed goals. So now, my friend would you wish me a luck to find my perfect English partner very soon?..Perfect in a sense that we be able to support and learn from each other not only in acquiring skills but also, as I quote from you, we could be able to build a lasting friendship. A meaningful and a happy one.

    As what I understand, you are saying that writing is the most important one to improve first, right? If one could be able to master writing skills the other skills would follow? or Should one develop and give time to both at the same time? Meaning writing and speaking at the same level of effort?

    I am really hoping you won't snob me for the next time as I ask so many question always...

    Take care! And thank you for giving me your hand to clear so many matters for me..
