Me: What do you think about polygamy? Are you willing if your future husband has another wife?
Friend: It's fine. I don't mind.
Me: Really?
Friend: There are only two conditions.
Me: What are they?
Friend: I must be the first wife.
Me: Okay. Then?
Friend: He must step over my corpse.

Fact in Islam --> Rasulullah (Sallallahualaihi wasallam) married again after 25 years of marriage and after his first wife dead. He really loved his first wife.

Husband: Darling, may I marry again? I want to do Sunnah Rasullullah (Sallallahualaihi wasallam).
Wife: Sure! You may, darling.
Husband: Really? Thank you so much, my dearest wife.
Wife: But it's me who will find you the wife.
Husband: I don't mind. It's fine.
Wife: I will find you two wives at once.
Husband: Oh, darling! You're truly the kindest wife in the world. When will you introduce them to me?
Wife: Tomorrow.
The next day.....they were knocking on the door. "Tok! Tok!" And, the wife introduce the candidate to her husband.
Wife: Darling, this is Mrs. Welwel, 65 years old.
Husband: My dear, how .....? eem....aa.....
Wife: Why, darling? What have you read so far? You don't know about women married by Rasulullah (Sallallahualaihi wasallam)?
The second candidate.
Wife: This is Mrs. Marmar, 71 years old.
Husband: Darliingg.....! Ee.......aa..... I cancel my intention of doing so. I will do another Sunnah Rasullullah.
Fact in Islam --> Rasulullah (Sallallahualaihi wasallam) married again when he was over 50 years old, and most of them are older than him. There were reasonable reasons on the next marriages.

Note: Sunnah (in Islam) means something that if a person does, one will get reward from Allah. If one doesn't do, one doesn't commit any sin at all.
Mubah (in Islam) means if one does or doesn't, they won't get any reward nor punishment. Sin after that is another matter. (basic Islam law for polygyny)

Hi Mary,
I don't know what you mean 'hippie' here. But i'm absolutely sure YOU took a WRONG understanding about this polygyny. I hope you ARE ABLE wisely to differentiate Islamic rule and culture as no word of that censored word slavery in my country AT ALL. If any culture in one place did so, it's of course not 100 % of the society did the same.
And for women to be acceptable to do the same (polyandry), I wonder why you care as it is not the rule for you. :) But, it's fine, I will explain one of the reasons why as members here already mentioned reasons.
I guess you already read Mishaikh's comment here or on Dara's discussion or bet's blog. Let's make an example.
A wife, A has two husbands B and C. She bore a baby named D. In D's certificate birthday, who's the father? :)) Should they do DNA test every time they have child? That sounds funny. :) I think no country nor culture permit this tradition until now.

Dear Onee! Your sense of humor is amazing! I do like 70 year old choise! hahaha! But let me tell you if I could have a few wives, I would be a bachelor! It is much more exciting to enjoy life having no obligations! ROLF!
So, in the past when having wives up to four was allowed...then Muslims were few in number, more over as still unmarried men in some countries and culture are not interested to marry widows or if they want their families dislike it and protest it so in my understanding such a rule was needed to protect those ladies. But, now, I can see the men who want to marry more, they like to use this rule as a name of religious practice. But, they should remember, if a man marry more than one lady there are so many rules to follow and now situation also has been changed! And, what those men never want to let others know, it was also said, one marriage is the best! So, now tell me what do you think?
Dear readers and friends, I think, you did not get what Onee tried to say here! In my understanding, Onee tried to show us why in the past, specifically in the middle East men were allowed to marry up to four wives. Here, Onee showed us one important reason. And, the reason is, widow marry. You must know in the past widows and not only widows actually girls/women were treated badly. In Indian subcontinent widows had to die with their dead husbands ( in Hindu society), needless to say women of different groups also faced a lot of obstacles and problems too. In Arab worlds girls were buried after they born! I can understand as it is still not uncommon to see in my culture, widows remarry is a bit unwanted! We prefer them to stay alone with their parents or brother's families. So, it is very easy to understand what happened in the past. But, look, plural marriage is not for fun or to satisfy men's lust. It was allowed for a purpose, there were some very reasons. And, it is also true in Arab world and beyond Arab world there were plural marriage, wealthy and higher post holder men had even more than hundreds wives! And, please, note that all Muslim males around the globe did/do not marry more than one wife!
Dear friends and readers! I think, you did not understand what Onee tried to say here! Look, Onee gave examples why in the past there was plural marriage system for the men and in which situations. believe me, plural marriage is not for fun, it is also not an advantage for the men too. And, along with it, we should consider the time and situations. Then why Onee gave such an example, see, she tried to say against those men of present time who unnecessarily use this rule to fulfill their lust!
And, yes, I am also confused after reading why women are in more risk if they marry more and why men are in less risk?! Is there any scientific reasons? If know, please share.
Anyway, in the past widows were bound to live a hectic and tough life. Even in Indian subcontinent widows had to die with their dead husbands, and it did not happen in the ancient time, it happened around 16 century too, If I am not mistaken! Widows had no right to marry again but you know that time girls were forced to marry too early! Many of them became widows just around early twenties or thirties, so? So, If no one would marry them what do you think? You also should know, in some parts still unmarried men do not want to marry any windows, if men want, their families hate it and most of the time they do not let it happen, they protest it, they say bad words against the ladies! And, it is also in our societies if a widow wants to marry she faces negative words and it is not so uncommon scene till now! And, please take this as a true that all Muslims around the globe do not have more than one wife, to be a Muslim does not mean they all live in the Middle East! Evey country has different culture and in different countries people live with different faiths!
