MyEC: More than a Chat Room

MyEC: More than a Chat Room: Listen

We all use MyEC for different reasons. My primary reason for using MyEC is to encourage English learners to write. I love writing and I hope my passion for writing will rub off on the members here. I think blogging is an excellent way to practise and teach English.

Others use MyEC to share poetry or watch English videos or learn new vocabulary. Many of you have found groups with people who have like interests. You forget that you are practising English because you are discussing things that you love to talk or write or speak about.

Some of you (though these people probably don't read blogs) use MyEC primarily (or even solely) for the chat room. The chat room is a great part of MyEC because it allows you to practise English in an informal way. You can make friends from all over the world. If you have a quick question, you can ask someone in the chat room. You can also invite a friend in the chat room to have a video chat using something like Skype.

Unfortunately, the chat room has some bad eggs. A bad egg is a person who wants to spoil the fun for other people. These chatters have no use for MyEC other than causing trouble. Do you see these chatters blogging in English? No. Do you see them practising their speaking skills? No. Do you see them uploading useful pictures for learning English or taking video challenges? Probably not. Many are banned on a weekly basis under various names.

Each week we receive dozens of requests to reinstate banned members. In most cases it is about something that happened in the chat room. Can I share a little secret? We don't read these messages and we never respond to them. It's not because we don't care. It's because we do care. We want to put our energy into caring for the English learners and teachers who are here for the right reasons. If a person gets banned incorrectly, it is a shame. If you've been  banned incorrectly, please come back and blog about your experience (we know you know how to come back). If you don't want to blog you could upload a video. You could even tell your story in the Audio Speaking Group. Whatever you do, don't hide in the chat room because there is so much more to MyEC!

A huge thank you to all of the members who put their energy into many different areas of this club.

  • Please report these people. Don't leave on account of them. This is your club, not their club. Thank you!

  • Thank you for this explanation :)
  • Thanks Mc Dreamy. Yes, I understand that some of you are nervous about blogging. You could start by reading blogs and leaving comments on blogs, photos or videos. Eventually you will be inspired to write something of your own! Thanks so much for your comment. It is an important reminder.
  • thank you so much Tara, you are right, but there is something you should know, sometimes we couldn't write because we are just learners,we wrote some bad tenses and we feel shamed to put it in a Blog, yeah we have a lot of Ideas ,a lot of experiences to share but ,,,I don't know it's like that, for me my only reason to be here ,is the reason  which this website built for.Well I will try to write because I like writing so much, and I will let you know,ok,just to correct me ,so it's a nice job .bye for now.
  • Thanks Fernando! I love that English learners are using blogs to practise the language. Members amaze me every day.
  • I'm glad to hear that the chat room was a starting point for many of you, including Dreamer, one of the most active members on our site! It's so interesting to read about your progression as you worked your way around and became more confident. Maybe the chat room could use some MyEC "mentors". Can anyone define that word for us here? What would a MyEC mentor do in the chat room?
  • from my experiance in chatroom , we really enjoyed chatroom before , we made some precious friends only from main chatroom evryday and enjoying some actual topic like politic , friendship and  the problem of young wich is marriage , love on internet and many many intersting topic sometimes the chatroom is full of opinion cuz all people get invollved in the topic but what i see now is that all change many bed Legs as you said come and just want to ruin the chat so i hhave left the chatroom and i prefer now to comment on blogs and participate on audio speaking it can help us improve speaking as well , I hope chatroom will be back as before and no annoying members come to distrub ,

thnk you Tara for your advice :)

  • Karenne,

Good point! Glad to know you love the chat room. Chat room can be an ideal place for learners to practise spoken English - if only there were no such guys as 'bad eggs' who would spoil an otherewise nice discussion! Those people who want to 'chat somebody up' can find plenty of those sites online. So, I wonder why they don't go somewhere else instead of hang about in our chat room.

I'm surprised to know that some of those who prefer to go to the chat room are afraid of making writing mistakes, such as grammar, vocabulary. We usually say you never really learn if you never make any mistakes. We never laugh at those who make some mistakes in their wirting. Actually, we tell them nobody here expects you to be perfect. Making mistakes is just part of the learning.  It's hard to imagine that they will get a good command of English if they never make any mistakes. Even when you are in the chat room, your input will betray you and others could tell you're not good at English unless you say nothing.

Maybe I (as a moderater here) should take time to chat with members there in the chat room.
