~~~~~~ Chapter 8 ~~~~~~
"When did come back last night? You did not call me. I was worried." Saufiq's text was the first thing which she saw that morning. Saufiq hated texting, so to receive his text meant that he was a bit pissed off with her.
"Don't start with me Saufiq. I am a big girl. LOL. I came back late last night. I am sorry for not calling you. It was late, and I don't want to disturb your beauty sleep. LOL." Instead of calling him, she replied back his text. Tit for tat. In Lina's view, Saufiq was being childish.
For the next few months, Lina was feeling giddy. She was feeling that she was recapturing the lost of her sunny sides. Sometimes she would feel like giggling for no apparent reasons. She could not stop from smiling. Hakim would always shower her with romantic gestures such as sending her fresh flowers to the office every other day, opening doors for her and calling her every night before going to sleep. The office was buzzing with gossips about Hakim, but she tried to ignore them.
She had to juggle her friendship with Saufiq and her growing closeness with Hakim. Her growing closeness with Hakim drew contentious argument with Saufiq sometimes. “Served him right for all those girlfriends’ stories all these years” Lina knew she was being petty, but she wanted to re-capture all those lost moments with Hakim.
"Lina, Tuan Kamil came to the house the other day. He was asking is it possible for him to represent Hakim in asking whether you would agree to get engage with Hakim?” Lina was stumped with silence. How does she feel about Hakim? Even though they were getting close, she was not so sure that she felt the same as before. She was too independent for her own good sometimes. She liked being single, not answerable to anyone.
“I don’t know Mom. It is too soon. Let me think about it” Carefully Lina chose her words.
“What else you want to think Lina" Mom made it a statement rather than a question. "Both of you know each other since childhood. Hakim is a good man. He is financially independent. His kids need a good mother. I am sure you can be a good mother to his kids” Mom, being a mom always looked at those logical matters.
Lina had to admit what Mom said was right. She liked both of Hakim’s kids. She had met Sarah a few times when she came back to visit Mom. Sarah had made her childhood place as her own, which made Lina grateful. Lina wanted somebody to enjoy that place as she used to do. Adam was just like Hakim when he was a kid, but with a sunny disposition.
How does she felt to be a mother of those kids? She knew she could come to love those kids eventually, which was not hard to do, but it was just too soon to think further. All she wanted was to enjoy the moment, to recapture the magic.
Footnote
1. Tuan is normally used by a person of perceived of lower social position in addressing a man of higher social position. In this case, Tuan Kamil - Hakim's Dad is considered of higher position by Lina's Mom because he's rich and thus of higher importance in the village. In English it can be synonym with Sir.
2. In Malay's culture, if a man is interested with a girl, he would ask his family or his family's representative to "inquire"; in Malay we called it "Merisik", whether the girl is available and agree to be betrothed or engaged. This is not the engagement itself. This is the pre-engagement. In some cases, a ring would be presented to show the intention. Sometimes, an agreement is enough. After getting the answer that the girl is agreed to be betrothed, then only then the family of the guy or his representative(s) would ask properly for an engagement. An engagement ring would be presented to the girl. In Malay culture, the man would never get involved in all these two processes. His family or representative(s) would speak on his behalf. The representative(s) normally from his other family members such as Uncle or Aunt or some elders.
  • Dear Blinky Sima .. yes, I'm a Muslim lady. :-) and proud of it. Anyway, Malay cultures are a mixtures of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Arab cultures due to the fact that years ago, Malacca was an important port in the Strait of Malacca where traders from China, India and Arab came over to trade. I think Lina deserved to fee some giddiness as teenagers due to her abrupt lost of Hakim. Thank you for reading, dear.
