It is agreat pleasure to write for the first time here ,since Bob asked me to write about my native town ConstantineHistorically,Constantine was founded by the Phoenicians whose main activity was trade.it was called at the time Sarim Batim(which means royal city)then it took another name Cirta during the Numedian control(4th centuryBC).Cirta was the capital of Numedia under the control of the King Massinissa.in 311AD,cirta revolted against the Romans who had invaded and destroyed it.By the year 313AD, the Empror Constantin reconstructed Cirta and gave it his name "constantine".Constantine had also been under the control of Arabs (islamic conquests)7th c,the Turkish 15th C and the French (from 1830to 1962 ) .Constantine is a nice Algerian eastern town.It is built on a big rock and has got many bridges!the highest one is SIDI MCID bridge also called the suspended bridge(you can see it in my photos),it is 175m high and 164m long. culturally Constantine is famous for it Andalusian music called Almaluf.the culture of Constantine is a mixture of several ones :Arab,Amazigh,Jewish,Turkish ,French etc.
wow thnks dear for such a nice information I never been in constantine but I have some friends from there they are so kind and friendly people and so educated I would like to visit it one day and take some pic on the suspended bridge thnks for sharing :)
hi Bob!me who should thank you for encouriging me to write about my native town!concerning your question about berbers ,im going to answer you:the real inhabitants of North Africa are the berbers before the coming of phoenicians.the word Berber meant by the Romans anyone who doesn't belong to the Roman civilisation is called so.there a re many Berbers living in algeria ;morocco,Tunisia. As far as Algeria is concerned berbers live in the north of Algeria, for instance in Tizi Ouzou ,bejea(very nice towns)and in tne South of Algeria they are called Beni Mizab and Twareg. The Berbers are also called Amazigh( referring to their ancestor named Mazigh)actually we Algerians are not purely Arabs 100 per cent .We are Amazigh BUT Islam arabised us!
Thank you Hayet for writing this informative blog. So many people are shy or afraid to do this, but it is a great way to practice writing and it helps all of us know more about places we may never see.
That is quite a mixture of cultures, but maybe should be expected with the mixed history of different peoples coming there to live and take over. Are there some Berber people there as well, or do they live a bit further away?
I am sure we will be learning some more from you soon :-))
I am from Algeria.
I love my country because it is so rich, not only with natural resources but also with its cultural and historical background.
I am watching a series in our channel talking about Constantine.
Entitled The body's memory. Taken from a novel written by Ahlam Almostaghanimi.
Thank you for sharing, dear.
