The song is nice and touching. I like it and I liked the singing. It was difficult to sing it on that day of course. But he coped and he did his best.

This song "Smile" was sung with an enormous amount of emotion. In fact Jermaine Jackson was so overcome he transposed the words 'gladness' and 'sadness' which added to the grief he was feeling at that time.

"you'll get by"= you will be okay; things will work out
"trace" (noun)=a very small amount
"what's the use"= why bother? =there is no good reason to do it
"sorrow" =sadness
