The Fox and The Jackdaw

This is an Iranian poem which I had to keep in my memory when I was eight years old at pupil school. This is the exact same page from our book. The poem is about a fox who trys to praise and admire a jackdaw because she has a cheese in her mouth ,and the fox struggles to take it .So, the fox says that how beautiful she is! How nice black wings she has! But, she can not sing as beautiful as other birds. To prove that the fox is wrong, the jackdaw starts singing and suddenly, the cheese falls down.Moral consequence: Turn a deaf ear to what people say and donnot believe what you hear!

  • Dear Ameur, it's interesting to know that we all have something in common.
  • Dear Manuela, yes, it is written by a Persian poet  in 7th century. I am familiar with ant and grasshopper. These are nice stories...This poet has a book full of these kinds of moral stories.

    Dear Nafis,
Is that poem Iranian, really ? The story you wrote up here looks sooooo similar to Jean de la Fontaine's poem "Le corbeau et le renard" = "The Fox and the Crow. Jean de La Fontaine born in 1621, was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He wrote many fables (all providing a moral). As Ameur,I had to learn many of them, by heart when i was in primary school. Have you heard about 'the ant and the grasshopper' or 'The Milkmaid and Her Pail' I think you would like those poems.
It seems there are previous greek and latin versions of this fable, so there might also be an persian version too ! Maybe Jean de La Fontaine just transformed it. That's interesting !
  • wow! it is interesting Ameur!
  • Dear Nafis, you reminded me when I was studying in the primary .. but I studied this story in French:)
  • Dear Zahra,

Exactly. We should listen but, I think words are very powerful and when they are negative words they can affect us even though we try not to be affected by them. So, in some cases, I personally try not to even listen to what people say. But, this is only my opinion and may be so wrong. I think it is important to whom we listen. If the speaker is an expert and very wise, it is really great to listen very carefully but if he/she is not and even have not an experience and just want to say something very negative, I prefer not to listen at all.

Thanks a lot for taking look at this poem. So glad you liked it. It reminds me of very good days of childhood.

    A big hug for you,
    Nafis

about the stuff;i think we should have open ears but we are the ones who should decide which saying to keep in mind and which saying to let go as wind blows ....
we should listen carefully but not be drown in what we hear ;we should be aware...
    what do you think?

anyway, thanks a lot for sharing this nice poem
