My dear friends! The idea of this discussion was suggested by my EC friend Ann, who told me a very romantic story related to one of the Scorpions' songs. I am sure you all know this German band and it is needless to introduce it. However, before starting this discussion I looked up some information about that band and was so very much surprised! I have never thought they are older than me! But I am not going to tell out their secret. It is one of the greatest bands ever existed together with the Queen (when I found out how old Freddie Mercury was I felt the same shock!). Perhaps one day the end of the 20th century will be labaled as the epoch of great rock lyrics. At least, I hope so!
So, back to the Scorpions. What I want to tell you, they have always been very progressive and politically active. They were the first famous Western band that visited the Soviet Union after the fall of the Berlin Wall. They also visited Ukraine many times. Their "Wind of change" was devoted to democratic changes in East Europe. Many of their best songs call for peace, for being aware of the world problems like poverty, hunger, dying kids, dying spirit. But many of them are about love, true feelings, human soul.

Wow! I am so glad to meet a man who likes such music. So, you play the guitar! And you sing for sure! It is very, very good! Dear ModaWay! Thanks for the great compliment! It would be strange if I didn't know history of my native country and my native city Kiev where I was born, raised and lived till the age of 35. In my childhood I lived in the ancient part of Kiev, where one faces history at the every turn. There lived our Grand Princes, there stood their ancient palaces and churches. There Vladimer baptized Kiev Russ , etc. Besides, I am sure that people MUST know their history if not to learn from its lessons (and it is a great pity!), at least to be able to analyze current situations and events and their reasons and effects.
As to the current situation in Ukraine. Unfortunately, in 1994 Ukraine refused from the nuclear weapons. It might have been the most hasty, wrong decision of all. But that time nobody could even imagine Russia would start military aggression against Ukraine. We supposed economic, political preasure, different mean acts but the war was inconceivable. If Ukraine had saved its third in the world nuclear potential, Russia would have never dared to go in war with it. The reason of the current situation is different: Ukraine is joining the European Union. It has already become the EU associate member. Before 2014 it was like a neutral zone, like a bumper between Russia and the EU. Such changes became possible after the Revolution of Dignity and the election of a progressive, democratic president, Petro Poroshenko last year. The former president, Victor Yanukovich, was Kremlin's protege. In fact, he was a traitor, who planned to give Moscow the east part of Ukraine and Crimea for Russians to be able to place their missiles and troops close to the EU borders. Besides, Russians wanted and still want to deprive Ukraine of an outlet to the sea. Russia managed to annex the Crimean peninsula without any shot as Ukrainian Army had been almost destroyed by Yanukovich. For you to compare: in 1992 strenth of the Ukrainian Army was 2 mln people +weapons. It was one of the most powerful armies in the world. In 2014 it was fewer than 150 thousand and almost unarmed. So, what I want to say is that Russia was preparing for this war for long destroying Ukraine from inside. However, during the last year Ukraine managed not only to restore its army but also to make it more powerful and modern. Not to say that Russian aggression changed Ukrainians. They united against the worst enemy they had ever had. This war raised Ukrainian national spirit and dignity. Unfortunately, it seems to be long and bloody as Russia breaks all international peaceful agreements and Ukrainians are not going to surrender.
As to "Ukrainian demonstrations", just read my blogs. I posted about 5-6 last year.It was bloody revolution. It began in Kiev but later on, most of big cities lived through the same.The former government ordered to fire the peaceful unarmed demonstrators and that withstad longed for a few months. Many people were killed or badly injured, the center of Kiev was partialy burned down or ruined. Since February 2014 almost every day Ukraine has been buring its best sons and daughters! But there is always hope for the better future! In my opinion, it may come, if Russians realize Putin is insane and get rid of him, like Ukrainians got rid of Yanukovich. But it is very doubtful as Russia has always been an EMPIRE. However, you know, there is always the last straw that breaks the camel's back. I sincerely hope, the world will get rid of aggressors one day.
Dear Jeffrey! I know, these Scorpions don't sting but I was stung by a scorpio being in South Asia when young. It was not pleasant at all, so I have avoided visiting that part of the world since.
Dear ModaWay! You are right: Russians, Ukrainians and Byelorussians have the same roots. Our ancestors were ancient Eastern Slavs who populated the territory of modern Ukraine at the beginning of B.C. and maybe even earlier. My native city Kiev was founded by them in the middle of the 5th century. Approximately the same time the other big town, Novgorod, appeared in the north (now it is a Russian city). Some time later Novgorod grand people invited vikings to govern and defend their town as they were not able to rule it(so typical for Russians!) and one of those vikings became their Grand Prince. His name was Oleg. He is famous for creating the first East Slavic state, Kiev Russ, in the midlee of the 9th century. There was no Russia that time. Everything was OK with Kiev Russ till the 12th century. The10-11th centuries are considered to have been the Golden Age of that ancient state. There were two grand princes: Vladimer, who baptized Russ and stopped wars and his son Yaroslav the Wise, who established diplomatic relations with the East and the West and started educating people. But when Yaroslav died, his sons started fighting for leadership. As a result, Kiev Russ collapsed and its nothern part gave the beginning to Russia. So, Kiev is still called "Mother of all Russian towns". Later, after Tatar-Mongolian invasion Ukraine became an independent country. But it has always been such a titbit for everyone that conquests and invasions didn't stop for many centuries. At last, during the war with Poland, Ukraine decided to join Russia as Russia was already very powerful. It was in 1654 and that time it was the right decision. But later on, Russia started exploiting our land and people. It brought serfdom, almost slavery, to Ukraine, tried to destroy our culture, our language, started robbing our land and much more. In fact, we became enemies long before the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1991 Ukraine returned its independence and is not going to lose it again.
So, there is no surprise I know Russia well. I was born and raised in the former Soviet Union. As to St.Petersburg, it is a great city worth visiting.
