  • Hi, Alhgag! I am sorry it took me so long to answer. Unfortunatelly, I got very bad cold and was sick for about 10 days. But I am OK now and am ready to answer to your question.

Well, it is realy not easy to explain and I am unsure I can post such a large text. However, I will start my explanations and we will see what will happen.

As to the first pair "make a call" and "call up", the explanation is not complicated:

When we use the first expression, we don't have to mention our recipient and we don't want to mention him/her rather often. So, I can just say:

Excuse me, I have to make a call. (And that's it!)

If we use the second expression, we have to say whom we are calling:

I need to call up my husband.

    He often calls me up.

    Got it?

As to the other pairs, you should be aware that the verb "get" means some transient process. It means that some object has changed ( or is changing) its state while the appropriate verb means the fact. So, let's analyze the examples:

I am getting myself ready for going out (it means that I am in the process: I have taken a shower, I am putting on makeup, I am makink my hair and so on)

I'd like you to get the vegetables ready for salad (you should wash and cook (and/or peel) them

    Please, compare:

The salad was prepared well (it is a fact)

I was not prerared for the lesson (it is a fact)

Let's analyse the next pair. I think, it is the hardest pair to explain. Honesly, it is necessary to feel it. Let's omit it now. I will think it over, OK?

The last pair is "get confused" and "confuse". It is easy! The verb "confuse" means that something/someone confuses you while "get confused" means that you are confused by something/someone (Active and Passive Voices). Here are some examples:

Your questions usually confuse me a little for I am used to explaining vocabulary in Russian. (Active voice)

However, I have never been confused by such situations (Passive voice)

I don't really know what situation can make me get confused (become confused) (Passive infinitive)

As always, you can ask me time and again :)

  • hai everybody..

i here to improve my english..i curious how to write the essay with proper grammar and vocabulary to make that essay become nice..plz someone help me..huhu

  • hi ,Tanya how is it going? i wanna answer me this question may  be   complicated what i' m asking you about to verbs "get"and 'make" i noticed  to both usually use with adjective i don't find difference for instance make fire v fire

    make phone v call

    get ready v prepare

    get started v start

    get confused v confuse

i 'd like for you explain what the difference between them and how i know using the correct verbs in specific sentence such as  make confused is incorrect or get sure is incorrect  . is there any rules i could depend on it and always comes adjectives after these verbs otherwise
and i have another question but this doesn't relate english language i have a problem with all of members's profiles disappear and my profile why ? could you help me please?

i have note in  some cases i may use some words a little polite don't think this is disrespect from me i'm just practising
  • Thanks Tanya for your efforts
  • Alhgag! That is correct! No doubts! :)
  • as far i understand some action happens and happening result depends on each other  like this you should go to work otherwise your boss will fire you

  • Dear Ahgag! I am doing my best to explain you about "otherwise". OK, look here! Your example:"I like peach otherwise pear and i like  fruit except peach" is incorrect. If I got you right you mean the following:" I like all fruits except peaches". If you mean that you should say:"I would rather have a pear than a peach". If you mean that you like all fruits without any exceptions you should say:" I would have a pear, otherwise I would have a peach". It means that if you can't eat a pear, you will gladly eat a peach.

Here is a quote from one of the most famous dictionaries (LINGVO x3):

"You use otherwise after stating a situation or fact, in order to say what the result or consequence would be if this situation or fact was not the case".

I don't know why this word  is so difficult for you but go on asking.

  • Thanks Tanya for your explanation i appreciate that ,but I to  be frankly i no know how i ask you about "otherwise" i don't understand it  at all !
indeed i don't find difficulty in understanding any word like this word  this condition  is complicated i hope to find me way help me
    have a nice  day!

  • Hi, Mito! As to listening, you can read my recommendations above in this group. As to speaking, it is necessary to communicate orally. You can also find some useful information in the attached files and on discussion "Pronunciation software". Those are about pronunciation and everyday vocabulary.
  • I seem to have told about other and another but I don't remember where and when. So, I will explain it again.

With singular nouns we can use "another" or "the other".

"Another" means any other. We use another when we mean any other object of the rest. For example:

There are many pens on the table. My pen is broken. I will write with another.

We use "the other" when there is only one object remained.

There is one pen on the table. My pen is broken. I will write with  the other.

With plural nouns we use "others" and "the others".

"Others" means some part of the rest while"the others" means all the rest. For example:

There are 10 cars in the parking lot. 3 of them are red, others (5) are white, the others (2) are black.

    Is it clear?

Practicing English

Everybody has their own methods to learn English. For the first time, I learn from songs. It is easier for me, cos it is a fun way. I learn vocabularies, grammar and idioms... and also pronounciation. Books gives me a lot of knowledge. The most difficult for me to learn is speaking cos we must have a partner to practice. We can't do it alone. I am a housewife with 3 children, and 2 of them are kids, really so hard to find partner to practice cos of my bussiness taking care of them. My husband…
