to plan secretly with other people to do something bad, illegal or against someone's wishes

[+ to infinitive] He felt that his colleagues were conspiring together to remove him from his job.

As girls, the sisters used to conspire with each other against their brother.

avert verb ( PREVENT )

to prevent something bad from happening; avoid

to avert a crisis/conflict/strike/famine

to avert disaster/economic collapse

 

avert verb ( TURN )

to turn away your eyes or thoughts

I averted my gaze/eyes while he dressed.

We tried to avert our thoughts from our massive financial problems.

 

 

chore noun

/tʃɔːr //tʃɔːr/ n [C]

a job or piece of work which is often boring or unpleasant but needs to be done regularly

I'll go shopping when I've done my chores (= done the jobs in or around the house).

I find writing reports a real chore (= very boring).

 

 

pilgrim noun

a person who makes a journey, which is often long and difficult, to a special place for religious reasons
