Italics

 

Study the following sentences:

  • In his book, Chariots of the Gods? , von Daniken argues that ancient cultures had contact with visitors from other planets.
  • In a later book, In Search of Ancient Gods, von Daniken sees additional evidence in a famous map.

In printed works, titles of books (except the Bible), magazines, newspapers, works of art, long poems, movies, and names of aircraft and ships are italicized. In handwriting, these titles are underlined.

  • I think Hemingway’s best novel is A Farewell to Arms.
  • The Mona Lisa is my favorite painting.
  • His source material was taken from Time, Newsweek, and the New York Times.

 

Italics (underlining) is also used to distinguish letters, figures, and words when they refer to themselves rather than to the ideas or things they usually represent.

  • Do not leave the o out of sophomore.
  • Your 3’s look like 5’s.
