Punctuation Note (7)

Quotation Marks (Part 2)

Study the following sentences:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • “I could have prevented the injury,” she keeps telling herself.
  • An Italian proverb notes, “when the ship has sunk, everyone knows how they could have saved it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quotation marks are used to set off the exact words of a speaker or writer.

  • I feel as though I’ve been here before,” Sheila murmured to her husband.
  • The biology professor said, “Ants are a lot like human beings.
  • What a beautiful diamond necklace Judy is wearing!” I exclaimed.

Important Hints:

1. Every quotation begins with a capital letter.

2. A comma sets off the quoted part from the rest of the sentence.

3. Other punctuation marks such as commas, periods, question marks, and exclamation marks always go inside quotation marks.
