COMMA (Part 2)

 

Study the following sentences:

  • But with Jordan out, that’s good to hurt the Bulls worse than the Lakers.
  • At the end of the first half, the Bulls are leading 47 to 44.
  • The more he plays, the better he looks.

In addition to the points mentioned in the previous unit, the comma is used:

 

1.With double comparatives.

- The harder he tried, the more he succeeded.

 

2.After a long phrase that begins a sentence.

- Even after working on it the whole night, I didn’t get the paper entirely finished.

 

3.Before conjunctions such as and, but, or, yet, so, and for.

- Paul closed all the windows, but the predicted thunderstorm never arrives.

- I like wearing comfortable clothes, so I buy oversized shirts and sweaters.

 

4. With expression such as on the other hand, to tell the truth, for example, in fact, of course, etc.

- It is necessary, of course, to leave now.

- To tell the truth, I’ve never been to Australia.
