Capitalization Note

Study the following sentences:

  • Was Columbus really the first explorer to discover the America?
  • On May 25, 1969, Ra left Safi in Morocco.
  • They crossed the Atlantic in 57 days.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 

 

Capital letters are used with:

 

1. The first word in a sentence.

          The corner grocery was robbed last night.

 

2. Names of persons and the word I.

        Last night, I saw a comedy starring Charles Chaplin.

 

3. Proper nouns e.g. countries, languages, seas, mountains, streets, etc.

          Iran       French       the Black Sea       Mount Everest       Fifth Avenue

 

4. Names of days of the week, months, and holidays.

          Monday       January       Christmas

 

5. Names that show family relationships.

  • Aunt Florence and Uncle Bill have bought a new house.
  • Grandmother and Mother are away on vacation.

 

But: Do not capitalize these words when they are preceded by a possessive word such as my, your, etc.

  • My aunt and my uncle have bought a new house.
  • His grandmother and his mother are away on vacation.
