I'm sorry, Nadira, I'm rather too late to reply. I have very limited knowledge.
I think, there are three stages of development:
1. If one embraces Islam, one becomes a Musalman. Shariiat will test emperically whether one is Musalman or not.
2. What about Iman?
3. What about Ihsan?
Kufr and Shirk don't come and go by a single stroke of just verbal pronouncement. In reality (Haqeeqat), one sheds Kufr and Shirk by and by through persistant ibadat & jidd-o-jiha'd(not jihaad) in addition to observance of Fardh.
I"ll suggest you to read PURITY OF LIFE -- one of my blogs on speakingtree.in
I agree with Ahmed Atef Ahmed because Abo Lahab claimed to be God. He, obviously, did not believe in God.
At the moment let us all pray God bestows on us all better understanding -- aql-e-salees -- and bless us with fiq.
