My dear friends! Being a professional teacher of English grammar, I decided to start this group to help you improve your knowledge of the subject. Many members asked me to do it and I do feel like that! So, I am planning to start a few discussions where you will be able to ask me questions or to have some practice. I'd also like to involve my husband, a native speaker, who is supposed to be helpful. So, how do you feel about such a group?
Rewrite into a passive sentence: "You haven't given the gift to Pete"
Is it not "The gift hasn't been given to Pete by you" ? I was marked down for writing my answer as such instead of "The gift to Pete hasn't been given by you". How is it any different?

Welcome, dear! Just try to write a few more sentences
okay..... Dear professor, thanks a lot! I will try to write something using this rule, thanks again.
Dear Bet, hi!
I bought the tickets online is correct.
Here are your corrected sentences
1. Having read a book for so long I got headache. ( No, you are not right, I am sorry. It is importand that I read it. The participle must be in the perfect form as you had been reading BEFORE you got headache)
2. Watching the nature closely I found people are responsible for its degradation (It is not bad, but I would say "I found people to be responsible").
3. Lying on the couch __ I am reading a book.
4. Watching me from the distance he has recognized me and __ is coming up.
5. Having held the books for so long, her arms started hurting and she dropped the books on the floor (It sounds strange in the present tenses. Besides, she had been holding them for some time BEFORE dropping them)
Thanks!
Danny, I got it so i asked if I say...i bought tickets on line, I hope it is also correct, right?
Now, let me show you some sentences , with participle phrases.
1. Reading a book for so long I got headache. ( as the reason is reading, am I right?)
2. watching the nature closely i found people are responsible for its degradation.
3. lying on the couch now i am reading a book.
4. watching me from the distance he has recognized me and now pacing up.
5. holding the books for so long he gets pain in her hand so she is drooping them on the floor?
Dear Bet, first of all, I told you that the correct sentence is
I bought an umbrella __on line.
Now, about the participle phrase. It must be very close to the word defining its target. You should always ask yourself who/what is doing it.
In your example, it is "I". It was you who was enjoying the nature.
In my example, it is "I" as it was I who was lying.
So, in boh cases the participle phrase must be BEFORE the subject.
Let's consider some other examples.
I saw the boys playing football (The boys were playing football)
Talking and laughing, we didn't notice it getting dark (We were talking and laughing)
Is it clear now?
Onee, ETC is used in scientific writing. It is OK to use it in the articles, stu books, documents.
There is no difference, but we mostly use Latin in science. Is it clear?
So, it's not about formal and informal?
Or do you mean 'etc' is more formal....?
Teacher Dan, ,, I must improve my English skill,,, and knowing formal & informal is kind of important for me now... :D
Thank you very much, dear teacher Dan..... :)
