I'm from Vietnam, a country located in the southeast of Asia. Being different from most of the Western countries, our New year officially starts on the 1st January counted following the Lunar calendar, it means that we step in New year latter about 1 month than many countries in the world. In Asia, there are some countries have the similar New year time to us like: China, Taiwan,...In my country, the New year occasion called "Tet", the most important time in year to all Vietnamese people. We have about 1 week day-off for enjoying our great time. Before "Tet", almost of all households tidy carefully their houses, go shopping for buying many goods in the very exciting environment. Vietnamese have many beautiful and unique customs in "Tet" holiday. We usually decorate our houses with the special kinds of trees called :"Quat","dao","mai". In term of food, "trung"cake( a traditional cake made of rice, green peas, meat;it is boiled in water), meat-roll, chicken-boiled, bamboo spout soup are indispensable on the table of each Vietnamese house hold. On "tet"days, as the old traditional custom, Vietnamese children will be received the red-envelope which has amount of money inside(called"Li xi") from their parents, relations, known adults; this habit is very meaningful that blessing the children, expelling evils, giving best wishes for them...On the first day of New year, Vietnamese people has a practice to go to the pagoda to pray for good health, prosperous, lucky, alive coming to all members of family. An other nice custom of us is that people always make a visit to their parents, grandparents,..eating a big meal with them, giving them good says like longer living, being healthier, always happy... "Tet" lasting with a series of entertainment activities; It's always such a great time of each Vietnamese people any way...

In Brazil, New Year's Eve is very special and beautiful. Some people usually go out with friends or invite them to meet at home and have a delicious meal. In Rio de Janeiro, for exemple, many people (about two billion or more) go to Copacabana beach to watch the fireworks at midnight. Then, everyone dance all night because there are concerts with famous bands there.
Unfortunately, some of them don't know how to have fun and end up envolved in accidents, what is not good for their families. Here, many young people die in this season of the year. We see many trajedies happening around.
Let's enjoy this time and get the best out of it. It's time to celebrate!

We celabrate in the night at 31 December - 1st January ( I dont understand why in the night For me its stupid tradition)) Whole day we cook, clean house, titivate tree (candy and toys). We have special dishes. There are salat, roast chiken and sweet, sure champagne and mandarins. After 12 pm everybody go out or call to friends to say Happy New Year, make a big salut and афт whole night. Its really good and friendly time when we have rest 1 week. After at 7 January we have Cristmas.
When I remembering my children year about New Year it were toys, gifts, salut and how I was waiting Deda Moroza (its like Santa Claus)))
Now I change my habits. Last Year I've been to Austria. Maybe in this Year I'll go to Egypt.

you know, here in my country we also call friends to say Happy New year, but it's too much annoying to notice the network busier. we most of time call, hearing not our friends well. Even while using internet, it's too low. What we do is to send greetings 3 or 4days before to get no problem.
But you can also be lucky on having a good conversation with friends, without troubles :-)

In my country Congo, our New Year's Eve is on 1st January
We all use to celebrate that in family, with close friends also. For Christian families, it goes from 31st December for we first go to church the whole night. we have Bible studies, a great concert with good Christian groups. We in fact have a break at midnight to take cafee. Then at the end we eat together (not too much for we don't miss the good food at home miam!).
After we go back home to cook, prepare the big New year table and then spend the rest of the time eating, talking and having fun. We really don not use to sleep. But if you're tired you can also take time to sleep when the rest are cooking
We typically eat fried rice, beans with tomato sauce, casava leaves mixed with vegetables, mais and special spices, fried fish, chiken and salads. We have a tradition drink called TANGAWIS (a kind of ginger natural juice with lemon), BISSAP (sorrel natural juice) and also coca-cola, fanta, pulp Orange, grenadine and sprite.
Most of time as it's difficult to see each other during work time, it's a day the whole family with cousins spend time together. we share stories and jokes, listen to so many songs for each of us bring CDs and good music lol
If someone planned us to watch a good movie, that's great!
