"A" refers to one of several, or many: I have a pencil.
"The" refers to a specific item, or perhaps the only item: I have the pencil.
"A" will be used before a word that begins with a consonant sound, "an" before a word that begins with a vowel sound: I used a knife to cut the string. It took me an hour to get here. I am reading a history of England.
