Mind-building activities

Hey hey, mind-builders and those are interested in this topic.

Due to my work, I need to solve creative multitasks at one time every day. As our body needs physical exercises every day, so our mind needs such exercises, too. In this discussion i'd like us to share "mind exercises" that can help us to develop next useful skills (thanks, Wiki, for shortening my time):

  • Seriation—the ability to sort objects in an order according to size, shape, or any other characteristic. For example, if given different-shaded objects they may make a color gradient.
  • Transitivity—The ability to recognize logical relationships among elements in a serial order, and perform 'transitive inferences' (for example, If A is taller than B, and B is taller than C, then A must be taller than C).
  • Classification—the ability to name and identify sets of objects according to appearance, size or other characteristic, including the idea that one set of objects can include another.
  • Decentering—where the child takes into account multiple aspects of a problem to solve it. For example, the child will no longer perceive an exceptionally wide but short cup to contain less than a normally-wide, taller cup.
  • Reversibility—the child understands that numbers or objects can be changed, then returned to their original state. For this reason, a child will be able to rapidly determine that if 4+4 equals t, t−4 will equal 4, the original quantity.
  • Conservation—understanding that quantity, length or number of items is unrelated to the arrangement or appearance of the object or items.

Seems I'm lost. Ok. Let's get back to reality.

So what are the exercises we can do every day and it can help us to exercise our mind

1) Riddles and logical tasks - good old riddles and logical jokes from the childhood. I made a rule for myself. Every day I find a new riddle and try to guess the answer.

2) TRIZ by Altshuller  - I don't know whether you heard about it or not but I adore TRIZ - tasks for mind developing. If to be very short in words, this method suggests you to solve different types of tasks. Some of them can have multi-sollutions, some can have only one but the reason is that EVERY SINGLE TASK CAN BE SOLVED. THERE IS NO ANSWER LIKE "I DON'T KNOW THE SOLUTION" or "IT CAN'T BE DONE" IN THIS THEORY.

The TRIZ - task for today for me was "What are the common traits between an octopus and christmas trees?" And you need to find at least 15 common traits.Try your mind!

Yesterday I made a task for myself in the following question: "What would happen on the Earth if all eggs disappeared?"  I was shocked by my own answers.

Want to try it? :) Let's go. I can give clues.

3) Drawing - yes, yes. It helps a lot. Every day I draw a simple line or a dot or several lines and dots on my sheet of paper. The task is to finish the picture in 1 minute and to make it logic.

4) Functions and usage - after the drawing ask yourself: "Ok, I drew the fan. Now  I need to think about 10 activities where I can use this fan". And increase the number of activities every day. Once I played this game with my friend and we increased the number till 58. Wow, the mind was working like Arnold in "Terminator" at that time. But when we got those 58 activities, the happiness was so strong as if we won 1 000 000 $.

5) Questions - "W-words" must be your best friends in life. Why, what, who, where, when, whom can show you the variety of ways when you have a difficult situation.

And now try yourself.

The questions is: name at least 25 common traits between a suitcase and an oak door.

p.s. I bet it will improve your English a lot!!! :-))) Try to read all answers and not repeat each other.

My answer is:

1. A suitcase can be as light brown as an oak door in the house.

    • 11) A suitcase and oak door can be opened and shut.

      12) You can enter the oak door so as can your stuff get entered into the suitcase.

      13) Either of the two has pocket/s (and it is suitcase)

      14) Oak door can not be lost, but you may loose suitcase anywhere especially on an airport (which I have recently done, but a bag not a suitcase).

      15) When both of them can be shut or opened so as can be locked and unlocked.

      16) A lover can run out of the Oak door to see her beloved, accompanied by a suitcase in case she is eloping with her lover.
