Week 8b: Friday, 31 October 2014

(1) Listen to the News by Tara: Listen to the recording of the latest news bulletin by Tara (there is a script, but please practice your listening too). To get to the News, follow this path:

Go to "Learn English for Learners" at the top of the page; then click on "listening"; then click on "Listening to the News"; scroll down to the latest news bulletin and click on the link; then on the new page, click on "listen to podcast of article".

A few students would be elected to tell the class the news by Tara (pse remember it is an oral class and not a reading class!).

(2) Video lesson: Stories from Morocco

We'll watch this 17 minute video about the development and learning of English in this northern African country, Morocco. Thereafter we'll answer questions in groups.

It is not necessary for you to watch this video before class as we'll watch it twice, but if you would like to, here is the path to follow on this website (as the video is available on this website):

Go to "LEARN ENGLISH for Learners" at the top of this page; then click on listening; then scroll down and click on "The Learning English Video Project"; when you get to the last page, scroll down till you get to the right video (the 7th and last one on the page). Here is a direct link: https://www.englishclub.com/learning-english-video/index.htm

Pse read the attachment too.

    • You were not late, Sun Huanmeng; as long as you do your comment before the class so that I can see you know what the lesson was about. But, this time, like all (but one) other students, you didn't comment on the most important part of the lesson which wasn't the news. The idea wasn't that the students watch the video by themselves (I said that in the lesson content), but they were supposed to read through the class worksheet which was attached.

    • I hope you have sorted your computer out now, Helen? I asked Tony to contact you to offer his help. We must get your computer fixed this weekend! Btw, you know now that the news was only a very small part of the lesson, right? So, next time you will read through the lesson content yourself and give me the correct comments (and not just follow the incorrect example of your classmates before you). Thank you.

    • Luo Yuanyuan, looks like you took note of my replies to your classmates and gave your comment on the correct part of the lesson, the mail topic. So, thank you for this comment; it's the only one that actually deserved good marks. Oh, and you are not only right that English is the most widespread language in the world, it is only the most important language in the world. With English one can get along in almost any country in the world, but with Chinese you can only get along in one country. So, you are doing the right thing to improve your English language skills.

    • Though I'm unhappy that the students didn't read the lesson content and commented on the mail lesson, at least I can see you put in an effort to figure out the news which most of you had a problem in following, Caroline. Of course they supply a script with the news to help the students, but I am glad you looked up the words you didn't understand. That's the only way to make progress.

    • Zhao Ziwei, if you realized that your listening skill needs improvement, are you going to do something about that? Did you notice the many listening exercises they have on this website? And another thing, do you know that the News by Tara isn't the only part of today's lesson? What about the main part, the video on Morocco?

    • So, you learned something through this listening exercise, Li Yaze ... that you have to work harder on you listening skill. Did you notice the many listening exercises they have on this website? Btw, did you also know that the News by Tara isn't the only part on today's lesson?

    • Thank you, Amy. So, now you see that you need to work much harder on your listening skill. Did you notice all the listening exercises they have on this website? And when one listens ans there are words one doesn't understand, one has to look them up in the dictionary - otherwise the passage would not make any sense.

Did you know the lesson for today consists of two parts? If you don;t know that, then you haven't read through the lesson content. The major part of the lesson is about Morocco, but not even ONE of you made a comment on that.

    • I'm glad you have discovered that your listening skill needs attention, Zhang Tianjiao. So, what are you going to do about that? Did you notice the many listening exercises they have on this website? And another thing, why did you only comment on the news - like ALL the above classmates? What about the next part of the lesson about Morocco?

    • Yes Yao Zengjun, it sounds like you have to work harder on your listening. There are many listening exercises on this website. You know what you should do. But, did you know there is another part of the next lesson; one about Morocco? So, today you would come to class unprepared, except for the news ...?

    • So Xu Yang, now you know you have to improve your listening by LISTENING more to passages like that. There are many such opportunities on this website alone. So, it depends on yourself what you are going to do about it. But btw, is this the only part of the next lesson? What about the rest?
