(1) Man Overboard: Role plays in 7 groups of 6 students.
Please read the content of the lesson before you comment.
(2) News by Tara: The students who didn't leave comments this week, will be asked first to tell us the news. Please sum the news report up in your own words (after you have hopefully listened to it several times). You know now where to find Tara's news (it is in the 'Learn English for learners' section under 'Listening').

Thank you for the reply, Shelly. You said that friends would be more closer by drinking here. So, does that imply that if there are some people who do not want to drink, that their friends would reject them (or at least their friendships would be harmed)? And what about visitors who don't believe the drinking is right ...? Does the Chinese culture about drinking then implies that such people would be rejected and discriminated against? I know the answer, because it is often happening to me, and you may feel ashamed (on behalf of your people) if I tell you what the men's general attitude is toward someone who does not take part in cultural habits that go against his beliefs .. ;-)
Thank you, Liu Weifang; I'm taking note of your reply. ;-)
Helen, when was this comment made?
Helen, why did you not answer my question?
Liu Weifang, was the pop star and the millionaire your own choice, or because most other students here chose them?! And did you have time to prepare Tara's news? I'm not sure whether the students who wait for this afternoon before making their comments, are really well-prepared for class. I hope you and Hui Ying will prove me wrong today ..!
This was my last comment on this lesson. Students are waiting too long to make their comments for the lessons. Why don't you plan better?!
Hui Ying, the idea of making comments is for me to see whether the students have knowledge about the lesson content. I'm not convinced by your comment that you would be well-prepared for today's class. I hope I am wrong! Can I ask you to tell the class about Tara's news today?
Shelly, why did you chose the pop star and the millionaire?! I agree more with the content of your second paragraph! I am glad to read that you know most of the words Tara's used in her news bulletin. And I am happy that you are positive about improving your English. If I can be an instrument in that, it would be a privilege!
But just a comment about what you said regarding teachers. I'm not sure that you understand this issue correctly (forgive me if I am wrong!). It's not the female Irish teacher with an alcohol problem; it's about their past experience with other Irish teachers and alcohol (probably men!). But now they are discriminating against probably an innocent female teacher from the same country. Why do you think teachers should be banned from drinking in schools (and probably universities too)? Do you think that should apply to China too ...?! Your class told me last week that drinking is part of Chinese culture ... So then, such a rule would go against Chinese culture!
Long Yuan, I think you have it slightly wrong here! It was not the teacher with a problem with alcoholism! They made a generalization as in the past they had problems with Irish teachers that drank too much. So, now they use that as an excuse not to appoint Irish teachers. Of course that was totally unfair as the problem probably arose due to the behaviour of male teachers (female teachers are not known for drinking habits!). But to discriminate now against a female teacher for that reason, is totally absurd. I don't think that was the real reason. I think they didn't want to reveal the real reason as it would have been more controversial. Oh, and btw, I have been in Russia for a few months a few years back, and I've been in China for a few years now ... and I think the Russians and Chinese drinking habits are the worst! So, what a pity to blame the Irish for something like that! ;-)
Maybe that is true, Zhang Min, but why do you think there are such stereotypes about China? I think the origin of that can be found within Chinese society itself! When something goes wrong inside China, it's always the foreigners or the west that get the blame (and the people are taught to believe that), but China is never prepared to take a good objective look at herself and start putting right what is wrong. It is too easy to blame others. I guarantee you that when that attitude will change, the world's stereotypes about China would also change and become positive! ;-)
