Giving Tree

Once there was a giving tree who loved a little boy.And everyday the boy would come to playSwinging from the branches, sleeping in the shadeLaughing all the summer’s hours away. And so they love,Oh, the tree was happy.Oh, the tree was glad. But soon the boy grew older and one day he came and said,"Can you give me some money, tree, to buy something I’ve found?""I have no money," said the tree, "Just apples, twigs and leaves.""But you can take my apples, boy, and sell them in the town."And so he did andOh, the tree was happy.Oh, the tree was glad. But soon again the boy came back and he said to the tree,"I’m now a man and I must have a house that’s all my home.""I can’t give you a house" he said, "The forest is my house.""But you may cut my branches off and build yourself a home"And so he did.Oh, the tree was happy.Oh, the tree was glad. And time went by and the boy came back with sadness in his eyes."My life has turned so cold," he says, "and I need sunny days.""I’ve nothing but my trunk," he says, "But you can cut it downAnd build yourself a boat and sail away."And so he did andOh, the tree was happy.Oh, the tree was glad. And after years the boy came back, both of them were old."I really cannot help you if you ask for another gift.""I’m nothing but an old stump now. I’m sorry but I’ve nothing more to give""I do not need very much now, just a quiet place to rest,"The boy, he whispered, with a weary smile."Well", said the tree, "An old stump is still good for that.""Come, boy", he said, "Sit down, sit down and rest a while."And so he did andOh, the trees was happy.Oh, the tree was glad.Questions:1. What are the parts of a tree mentioned in the poem?2. What are the gifts that the boy/man got from the tree?3. Write down some more parts of a tree.4. Make a list of other products and uses of trees.5. Why was the tree happy?6. Did you like the poem? why?

  • Dear Nuria,

Giving tree drives me crazy because when it does not have anything to give, it suggests the boy sit and rest on it. The boy is full of requests without having anything to give in return and the tree only gives and gives and does not ask something in exchange.

I have read a lot of books that indicate we should love unconditionally and be giving. But, i am wondering if it is really possible in real life or not because it seems stupid to be like that, always giving and not wanting in exchange. (or maybe I am wrong) What do you think?

    All the best,

  • Dear Kristanto,

I read an article about climate change and it indicates that because of changable weather, birds migrate sooner than before and they can not find any foods. Therefore, they will die. It is a sad story. Not only we destroy ourselves but also we destroy other animals.

    All the best,

  • i think the tree stands for our parents who are always available for our any needs. so the boy got love from the tree, same as we got from our parents.

But i do not like the way the tree treat the boy, too spoiled to let the boy know the true world.
  • It is a very good poem. It gives inspiration to all of the kindness and the power of giving. Unfortunately, men only can ask, ask, and ask. In a real world right many trees are being cut down. Too many destruct ions caused by the greediness of men. The big questions are who want to preserve our mother nature from the giant multy international operations????? Who have a dream that this place is a good place to live??
  • Dear Nadiyah,

Thank you very much for reading and watching the video. I like tis poem too. Some people are like the tree and some are like the man. Who are we really, the man or the tree?

    All the best,
    Nafis
