Be a Newscaster (2011)

Every Tuesday English Club publishes a weekly news report. There is a self study exercise to go with the story.

 

You can practise your speaking by recording your voice as you read the transcript. Upload your report in the comments below by using a program like Audioboo, or by recording it on your computer and using the paperclip above to upload the MP3 file. You can share your recording each week.

 

You can also record yourself answering the discussion question. Have fun!

    Confusing pronunciation (for me):

    1. coach/culture

    2. won/want

    3. goals/girls

    4. work/walk

    5. path/pass

    6. lose/loose

     

    You can add yours to the list. And, maybe we could ask Tara to pronounce them for us.

      Note: I failed to watch it.  Make sure to use the /eI/ sound   for the word "fail" as in "tail" "jail" "sail". In your recording it sounds like "field".

    Thanks for sharing the news! Wow! Congratulations to Japan!

    I still remember when Chinese women's team played with the US in a final. I never knew Japanese women's team could be so great. It seemed they used to be weaker than China's and Korea's women. But, you know, Chinese men's football/soccer team might be one of the worst football teams in the world, even though China can be at the top of the medal count for the Olympic Games. 

    But to the discussion question: Japanese always do things with high morale/spirit. The images the coach showed may have played an important role, but not the only reason why Japan won the Cup. To win the Cup, you need skills, strength, tactic, high morale, good luck, etc.

    Yes, as to football, the size doesn't seem to matter. Maradona, the world renowned footballer,  isn't tall at all. Messi, not either. Nevertheless, coaches seem to be still trying to find tall players.

     

    morale: level of confidence (different from 'moral')
