Oil Refineries and Petrochemical Plants

In the USA there have been several refinery explosions or fires every year, bit most are fairly small. Sometimes these are inside cities or towns. We all know that safety is important to these businesses, and that they do their best to prevent fires or chemical releases into the air or water. This discussion topic is to ask your opinion of safety and/or pollution potential near you. Are there ways you know of that it has been improved or should be improved?Aside from the questions above, this is an open ended topic (meaning discuss anything you are interested in relating to chemical plants and refineries; products they produce, impact on the economy, and impact on the environment).

  • Karenina,

Preventative action is exactly right. Consideration of possible hazards and then protecting against them. Once the accident has happened it is too late. Then the only action is first aide if the person is still alive. All industries including the forest products industries are starting to be proactive in protecting their employees.

Thank you so much for including this in our discussion on industries and safety.
  • Safety items?

  • Safety is paramount in the plants. They don't want anyone hurt or any harm to come to their equipment either. If something bad happens they hope to minimize damage to life, equipment, and the environment. Special training is required to enter the plant or the office areas. There are several alarm sounds you are taught so you will know what to do in an emergency.
There is special FRC (fire retardant clothing) such as Nomex that you must wear. The FRC is considered one of the many items of PPE (personal protective equipment) that you must wear for your safety. I will list several items and you can decide which are examples of PPE and which are not.
    safety glasses
    hard hat
    headlight
    personal fire extinguisher
    mono goggles
    cellular phone
    gloves
    inflatable fire shelter
    hearing protectors
    body armor
    steel toe boots
    H2S gas monitor
    matches
    fall protection harness

Which of these are probably not PPE? Think about what dangers may be there and then you can probably pick most of these correctly.
