There have been a few points in my life when I have attempted to live without television. In general, these have been the best times of my life. I often wonder what life was like for people before the invention of "the tube". If I lived alone, I would never own a TV. The only show I ever truly enjoy is Oprah. She is going off the air. Perhaps she already has. Here are the times I lived without TV:1. First year university (I lived in a dorm with 6 girls and none of us wanted a TV. We were the only dorm without one and students always came by for great conversations and beverages. We often played cards or Risk.)2. Final year university (My roommate and I used to watch TV when we did our laundry. We both had no use for TV at home. There was too much work to do. Spare time was for dancing. )3. When I lived alone for 6 months in a bachelor pad in Vancouver I was TVless. My living room was my kitchen and bedroom and office. Choosing to have no TV was the best part of living alone.4. We have a TV, but we are testing what it will be like to have a summer without using it. My children can still watch movies, but so far they haven't missed the programming. My husband misses his sports and news, but the Internet is very useful. I'm thankful for the World Cup updates from all of you!I wonder if we'll ever hook up TV service again. Life without TV is so much richer.Have you tried living without a TV? Share your experience!

I like TV (it has its own scarce benefits) but i've searched 4 a chance 2 live without it and unfortunately i didn't have that chance cuz i'm living with my family and dad is soooooo interested in news (news on different channels!!!) and mom loves TV series, thus what can i do?!!! I think TV acts like addictive drugs!!! we should keep ourselves away from it cuz most of time it really wastes our time (the most precious thing that we have in our lives)
Sometimes instead of watching TV i locked myself in my room 2 read books or entertain myself with the amazing virtual world: Internet... If i had this chance 2 live alone i definitely removed TV from the screen of my life...
when I was in school, I was a tv addicted. I did all the things in front of tv. I always go home as soon as I can from school to watched my fav tv program and when sunday came I would stuck in front of tv all day long. But, when I was in university my boardinghouse had no tv. this was the time I live without tv. then I addicted with radio and internet ^^
I do have a TV but not even a cable connection.I didn't bother about it. I have not been using my TV for 3yrs now since I have been living alone. I have had no urge to use the TV because most of the news and information I can get from the internet. Almost 11hrs are consumed working in office (including the commute) and when I come home I like to relax. Then later I get together with my friends and we go out or just hang around and chat. For movies sometimes I used the DVD player, but now with my laptop there is not much use of it either. Before internet everything was about TV. We made a special room for placing TV there. Now a days you can hang them anywhere.
Thanks for your story Julianas! It seems you had a really interesting life when you lived without TV. We only lasted a year, but in my opinion our year was much richer without it.
living without tv makes me lonely moreover living without friends makes me more lonely.
I once lived without tv. It was 13 years ago when i was firstly posted as a new english teacher in a remote village by our government. it's about 22 kms from nearby town. In that village, there was no electric current instalation either from the government or from private company, and i havent got married at that time, but i still enjoyed my life. i killed my loneliness by playing futsal, card, chess, guitar and walked into the forest, and etc with my colleagues and my students. yes of course, we lacked information expecially news items, but i tried to get information by getting a small radio. It lasted more than five years. And finally in 2003, i was moved by the government to the small town that i live in now. i think that's all of my experience living without tv , thank you very much.
So in my mind, having television is important but more important is having good friends, thank you.
I turn the TV on when I'm cooking in the kitchen. It's an old little TV set - not a cable TV and has seen better days. So, only a few channels are available on it. But, thankfully, it's not so bad - I can watch CTV (a local English channel) clearly on it.
So, why did they move the old TV set from livingroom or bedroom to the Kitchen? And, why do I turn the TV on only when I'm cooking? Yeah, you got it: TV seems no longer a neccesity for family life, even though it has had its day. I don't have time to watch it, too. And, it's hard for me to find something really interesting on it. I spend most of my leisure time on the computer. And, you can get nearly everything you want to see on the Internet.
Nevertheless, TV is still useful for those who are old and not familiar with the Internet. Some people still can't imagine a life without TV - too many of our memories are related to it. I even asked for a TV set when I was trying to rent a house here. And, watching the local TV programs is a good way to enjoy a city.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, TV is really useful for language learning! Thanks for sharing one of your secrets to success. Do you ever watch TEDTalks? I think you will enjoy them. You can watch them online.
