Satisfying and satisfactory, though similar in aspect, differ in that satisfying implies the fulfilling of a built-up need, whereas satisfactory implies only a meeting of existing standards. Pleasing and pleasant are synonyms, but pleasing implies an intention or effort to please, whereas pleasant denotes an existing attitude that pleases without effort.
  • Satisfying: providing contentment and freedom from worry
  • Satisfactory: meeting requirements; acceptable
  • Pleasing: giving pleasure and satisfaction
  • Pleasant: good-natured; enjoyable
