I'm just wondering, are we here to live and to die?

The dictionary defines life as the physical existence of humans and other living organisms. Is that so? the absence of physical/material aspect, tantamount to say that it's not life at all, isn't it?

Are we living this life worthwhile?

I could agree how the dictionary tries to define life, but that's not the whole truth about life. I believe that aside from the physical side of it, there is also the spiritual side that we can't ignore all the time. Even though we wanted to avoid the issue and believe that after this existence, there's no life after this life.

Are we living our life with a purpose or just consuming it the way we wanted regardless how lavish, how useless, how shameful, how evil we are trying to be, and the saying live your life to the fullest means what in particular? Does it mean that there is no order to follow?

Guys, with all sincerity, I want to hear your counsel regarding this matter, not to offend anyone, your views will be highly regarded. All opinions are important to me, whether it affirms or disproves my own assessment.

Thank you!

  • Well, as my wife's comment was not saved, I will tell you what she meant and I feel the same.

Sure, we agree with Luci and Rose and I will not repeat anything from what they said. I will try to answer your question: what  the sense of life is.

In our undersatnding, the sense of life is life itself. We subconsciously want to live forever giving birth to kids and giving them our genes. Reproduction is one of the main and most powerful instincts. We only think we need kids to enjoy "the last toy" or "to have someone who will bring us a glass of water when we are dying". In fact, we want to see our reflection in the next  generation, we want to revive in their future dids. The next generation will do the same and make life everlasting and it is the sense of our existance: Plant a tree, construct a house and give birth to a child, i.e., make the society better, save our planet for the next generations to have good life. We subconsiouscly do everything for our species not to die out.

    Thanks for your attention.

  • Dear Risty! Being an atheist, I will not repeat what Luci and Rose have already said. I agree with each word of theirs. I feel like speaking about something different. You ask a question: what the meaning, the sense of life is and I think most of people ask themselves this question. So, I will express my mind in this connection. Of course, it is my personal acception of life.

I think, the sense of life is life itself. Reproduction is our main and one of the strongest natural instincts. You know how strong  people's desire to have kids is. In many countries people say "I need a child to have someone to bring me a glass of water when I am dying". It is a kind of kidding, of course. In fact, we subconsciously want to prolong our existence on the Earth giving our genetic information to our kids.

I completely disagree that life is just consumption. If it were so, the regressive maknind would have died out many ages ago. Life is creativeness, constructive endeavour, it is development and progress. In my country is a saying " During his life, each person must plant a tree, construct a house and give birth to a child". Of course, it shouldn't be undestood literally. It means we must take care of nature, of our environment, we must create and develope our society so that the next generations will have better life on our fragile, but so dear and unique planet and we will live in our children as their genes. The future generations will use our knowledge and experience, will enrich and improve it and give it to the next.

So, that is what it is all about: the sense of our existence is to make life of our species on this planet everlasting. As for me, I am not scared of my own death as it is inevitable. But life will go on (unless we all kill each other and our planet)and I am happy to know it.

Thanks for the ability to share my mind and your attention

  • Dear Risty Aven,

It's an interesting question about the meaning or the purpose of our life. I know that religious people obey their god, however they call him in their religion. They believe in life after dead. And they believe that they always have to follow the rules of written words in their holy books. They seek for forgiveness for their sins when they want to have access to the heaven. I always ask me how they can believe so strong. There isn't any evidence for the existence of a heaven or god. Some rules don't give any sense to me as there are a number of prayers for example because only the number doesn't proof the honesty and cincerity of a prayer... just as an example. What is with people which kill others or robb and rape ... after that they go to pray ... do they believe that is enough to be free from sins? In every religion people believe in forgiveness.
Rules should be humans duty only because it's normal to treat people properly, never mind if they are religious or not. We should act human as our name tells.
I don't believe that god really wants that the believer only live on earth in expectation of death and a second life besides him. Until now nobody came back to tell us that a heaven exists. I will be glad for believers when it is the truth.
But we should not live our life in expectation of a second life. Much more we should try making our first life value. Help each other, using our existence to make this world a little better. That doesn't need always great actions... sometimes is it enough being compassionate and to give someone our helping hand. We should learn to listen to each other more and to try being more tolerant in respecting and accepting the opinions of others... as there are different life attitudes, habits, traditions, religions ... and much more.
The life of everyone will end sometime ... nobody knows when. And nobody KNOWS what happens after. So we should lay our focus on NOW. If we need the rules of a religion as a base for behaviour or not ... if we believe in god or not, it should be for everyone the same duty and it should have the same meaning and the purpose of our live: to be a human being.

  • I think we had been created to have healthy, wealthy, peacefully and happy life for ourselves, families, colleagues, society and all people all over the world.

Moreover, in order to achieve such a beautiful life; we need to know who we are, who created us, why he created us and what our destination.

We need sincerely, impartially and open-mindedly using our intellectual ability to answer these questions correctly without any prejudice.
