Teaching English

Is it wrong to use our native language to translate some new English words to our classes? Or we should always speak English ?

  • Yes dear Friend .it's just translating some hard words to students and sure not talk or explain in native language .Thank you for sharing .

You are really a good student :) I will post the new topic soon !

  • Thank you for sharing Mr.Adaway.Surely ,you are right. A lot of words can be translated according to its place in the sentence ,this is why we "teachers" translate the whole meaning and explain the general idea of the lesson first ,then the new words which connected to the meaning of the topic.

    • Sure it's better ,but if the students are in a lower level or for the elementary pupils ,I think English -English translation can't help alot.

Thank you Dr llody for sharing :)

    • Of course it's more useful for teachers and students to speak English ,but sometimes the exact meaning can't be described or needs alot of time so this is why we translate it .

      Thank you for sharing .

    • Yes Dear Hafsa! it's better to translate some new words in our native language for the kids .

Thank you for the comment .

    • Thank you Raindrops for this comprehensive reply .You are right English teachers should use many

ways :gesture, acting ,visuals....,but sometimes for difficult and abstract words we use our native language to save some time during the lesson ,and to make students understand the exact meaning of the word .

I hope we can always share our ideas here .Thanks again !

    • Thank you Ymn . You are right .we shouldn't be a translator for our students ,this will make the lesson boring and not active .Translation is only to few words that  helps in save the time and make the topic more clear .

      Nice comment dear !

  • One  has  to help one's student  by using  the native  language too.

I tell them  to  keep the bilingual dictionary at hand.  Prior  to the next  lesson they  should  have jotted  down the meanings to the words  they do not know

  • Well, what's your opinion on that account, Hala?

I totally agree with Nafis. The earlier you stop switching to your native language, the better result you gain. If I am not wrong, this is called the "immersion effect".
  • As a student, I think in lower classes, speaking in First Language helps students but in upper level, it must be avoided.
