How do you feel about homework? Do you think teachers should give homework every night? Should elementary school children have homework? In some countries, parents are trying to ban homework. Many parents think children should have the freedom to explore, discover, and read for pleasure after school. Some teachers agree. Other people think reviewing lessons after school is an important stage of learning and preparing kids for the workforce.

The last news I read was that two students in China committed suicide because they felt they failed to do their homework. And parents there, according to the news, complained about the education system that gives too many homework to students and emphasizes too much on memorizing lessons.
I remember about the time when I was at schools. Even if I didn't go to school because I was sick, I would have many homework to catch up. And not to mention about the punishments waiting for students who failed to finish their homework. I even still have nightmares of my school days where I forgot to do my homework or came late during exam days, etc.
So, I think homework still something students need. But, it shouldn't be student's nightmares as well.
It seems the winter is too long in Canada - you can hardly wait to see the spring. Out of nowhere, green trees or other plants are already everywhere and you can take a deep breath. Enjoy the spring and the nicer summer there. So, I agree with the teacher's decision. But, that is not the case here in China where so many students are in a so fierce competition. Forget it!
My daughter's teacher (Grade 3) stopped giving homework this week! She won't be giving any homework (other than a project and a weekly poetry reading) for the rest of the school year (7 weeks). She said she is doing this because the weather is finally nice and she wants kids to have more time to play outside. What do you think of this decision? My daughter is thrilled!
I agree that in some schools students get overloaded with homework. That being said, it is still important to study beyond what is covered in the classroom.
Maybe language classes are in less need of homework than some other subjects. I think that I would have not have survived mathematics without doing my homework. That was the only way to work enough problems to fully understand new concepts.
My answer is yes, homework is necessary but teachers need to avoid overloading the students.
I think as a teacher we should give the students some guided home work so that they can practice and understand easily.
This is a very interesting response about the homework question. When the weather is nice out, my kids are so busy with their friends after school that I don't see much of them. They come in for dinner and go back out until bath time. Homework time is sometimes the only time I see them after school. You have given me something to think about!
Hi!
In my opinion, homework is very necessary for students. Firstly, it helps us to remember what we have learnt at school in a long time. When we meet some problems in our homework, we try to remember what our teacher taught us. By this way, we never forget knowledge. Secondly, we don't have much time to learn at school, doing homework at home helps us to find more solutions to solve our problems in learning. Finally, doing homework helps us to have a good preparation for our examinations. As I know, we meet some tests that have the same format with our homework at some exams. If we meet the tests that we have done, we'll feel more confident and do well. Therefore, teachers should give homework to students.
However, giving homework every night isn't good. Life experiences are also necessary for students, they also need time to play, explore, etc. Teachers shouldn't give homework every night, and they shouldn't give so many homework once time. That makes student feel stressful and disappointed when they can't finish all of their homework.
Now, I'm a student, but I'll be a teacher in the future. I should think more about that. :)
I think the kids should feel easiness and comfort. So they should be given less and guided homework so that they can do easily and eagerly.

well.. I've had students that ask for homework, or extra practice, but when you assign them a homework, or bring worksheets, or online exercises, they don't want to work.
In other cases, they don't bring their homework for a or b reason, and of course, there are some who "pay" others to do the homework for them. And of course there are those who like to "copy & paste".
So, I guess it's better to have lessons in class. Then you can see they are working.
