According to so many things that I have seen I would say yes it is. So-called religious people always try to harness people by religion. We can see so many superstitious idea that originat from religion. Maybe religion means something else but the interpretation is wrong. For instance all through the history and even now women are not allowed to go to school or continue their education because it is justified by some religious beliefs. So it depends on how we consider religion.
so-called religious people always try to harness people by religion."
See, you say religious people..............so it is not necessary the cause is religion itself. (We can't blame the religion).
".....so many superstitious idea that originate from religion" Again there are no such things in any religion, these are all made by men, so again religion can not be blamed for this.
Not allowing females to to gain education in not in religions it is in certain traditions (wrongly attributed to religion), almost all the females in my family are highly educated.
All the hindrances are man made wrongly attributed to Religions.
If you take a look of Islamic History, you will find scholars in every field of science and there work largely contributed to the modern science development. They were all orthodox Muslim. If time permit me I would write their names, but they are all well known.
The bottom line is this that Religion never hinder in our material life, Qura'an advises in many places, to seek out the wonder spread throughout the universe, it invites mankind to get knowledge and understand. Those are the people who have created the unwanted hindrances time to time, and we follow considering that this is religion who says so. No, BIG No this is not the case.
Guys, religion have the rules of life. I believe there is a reason of each rule. Not only believe, but.... IF you could think and observe it deeply, practically, and open-minded, I'm sure you'll find the truth.
Well, the source of development is science. I remembered about Einstein's advice: "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind"
I do agree with you Onee. If we look into the history of development, we will find Muslims scholars who contributed in the field of Science, Mathematics, Astronomy, Chemistry, physics etc. and at the same time they were orthodox Muslims. Islam (religion) didn't hinder in their discoveries and researches.
Mishaikh...it should be "obstacle" and not "obsticle".

It depends on how people view or define the word "religion".
My definition of a "religion" is taken from James 1:26-27
…26If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless.
27Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
...then I don't think it can be an obstacle!

Debate is not a bad thing, this is a definition, taken from http://idebate.org/
Debate is a formal contest of argumentation between two teams or individuals. More broadly, and more importantly, debate is an essential tool for developing and maintaining democracy and open societies. More than a mere verbal or performance skill, debate embodies the ideals of reasoned argument, tolerance for divergent points of view and rigorous self-examination. Debate is, above all, a way for those who hold opposing views to discuss controversial issues without descending to insult, emotional appeals or personal bias. A key trademark of debate is that it rarely ends in agreement, but rather allows for a robust analysis of the question at hand.

Hi Jeffrey, as you know I´m catholic, and I have to admit what you said is the whole truth.
My duty as a member of Catholic church is to improve what is good and criticize what is bad, according to the principles of love, forgiveness, sacrifice and respect. And I will be irresponsible if I try to deny these and others failures, just because is my religion.
Catholic church have tried to change some things, (that´s very good), but must ask forgiveness for some actions and treatment of some communities.
since I'm Christian I will just answer regarding to my religion and not about others. I'm a few critical with the institution since in my opinion it should be update to the times we are living. Gerardo Gordillo replied with good examples although they are from time ago but nowadays there're other points I disagree. It doesn't mean I don't believe or don't love my God.
As for countries, maybe the ones which separate religion and government are more adapted for development.
