About eight per cent of all men are ' colour blind'. This is not an accurate description, because most of them can see colours, but they see them differently from other people. Interestingly, only about half a per cent of women are affected in this way.
Most colour blindness relates to the colours red and green. A smaller group of people has problems with blue and yellow. There are few people who cannot see any colour at all; they live in a world of greys, like on a black-and-white television.
Unfortunately , red and green are important colours. They are universally used in armies and in transportation. Red means 'danger', while green means ' safety'. At night, ships and aeroplanes use a red light for the 'port '( left) side, and a green light for the' starboard ( right ) side to show the direction in which they are turning. These colours are used because red is easily seen in the dark, while green, the opposite of red, would not normally be mistaken for it. Anyone in charge of an aeroplane ,a ship, a train or a car would certainly endanger himself and others if couldn't see red and green lights clearly.
