I'm not sure, but maybe we could distinguish graphic and phonemic types. Sauce[so:s], for example, isn't a graphic palindrome but it is a phonemic one. As for "cake[keik]" I'm not sure about the diphthong, whether we can pronounce it both directions in the same way [ei] or not. If we consider it as one sound though not homogeneous (it makes one syllable), then [keik] is a phonemic palindrome. But I'm not a big expert here. Perhaps there are some British, American or Australian linguists who can judge better. I'd like to know their opinion.
